 Uncharted 4 review: an apology
A special message from the executive board regarding our review of Naughty Dog's latest.
Last week VideoGamer published its review of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, the upcoming mega-hyped PlayStation 4 exclusive. At the time of publishing we were confident that we had produced a good piece of criticism, both in written and video forms. We were confident we had explained the game's appeal, where it succeeded and failed, and how the influence of The Last of Us had helped create a sequel which is really quite different from what went before. Over the past weekend, however, it came to light that we were, in fact, quite wrong about Uncharted 4, and as such some glaring issues with our review began to surface. We'd like to take the time to address these individually.
We'll begin with perhaps the most grievous error possible: having opinions. As one YouTube user rightly points out,"its (sic) clear his personal thoughts are all over this is a stupid review". A basic gaffe, albeit a serious one, and when it was discovered editorial director Tom Orry (@VGTomO) immediately called Steve into his office and demanded an explanation.
We're afraid to say he didn't have one, and looking back on it he realises that having opinions and thoughts on the game he played for tens of hours was wrong, ethically and morally, and just plain stupid. Like true fans of the series he should have instead gone in with the presumption that it would be the best game ever made simply because of who was making it and, armed with the review guide and a PDF of praise for the previous games, not diverged from an already-set opinion fueled mostly by bombast and a multi-million dollar advertising campaign. Even though we have punished Steve by beating him with sticks and making him play Uncharted 3 again, he still found the strength to ask that you please accept his sincere apologies.

Ouch. That's harsh...on Uncharted 3

Lol.  Uncharted 4 so good it's causing meltdowns for an 8/10 reviewer.  That's the ultimate compliment to the game.

I found Videogamer more stupid than fans due this PR.

LOL

QuoteWhile he does make superficially positive claims that it is bloody good, the best in the series, and that you should buy it, it is obvious that his anti-gaming agenda has gone too far.
Once again, we regret the errors, and in the future, in order to prevent further bias, Steve will not be allowed to give his opinion on games he has played and you haven't.

I haven't read their review, but the old "I have a right to my opinion" argument isn't a valid excuse. Actually, it is a fallacy, altogether. When you express an opinion, you better support it with sound reasoning and evidence. If it doesn't hold up to scrutiny, then that's your fault. This isn't to say Videogamer's review didn't support its claims since I haven't actually read it, but a fallacy is a fallacy.

Naw, the vast majority of reasoning behind an opinion is still an opinion.

For example lots of people swear up and down that Super Mario Galaxy has the bestest gameplay the world has ever been graced with and completely deserved of it's 97.
People also swear up and down that Uncharted's gameplay sucks and the only reason people play it is because it has movie appeal.

Personally I disagree very strongly with both opinions.  Personally gameplay wise, Uncharted 2>SMG.  Uncharted 2 was perfect for me.

So that's the big difficulty with opinions.  Most of the time, no matter how "objective", they are still pretty much always still an opinion.

I agree with that in most cases but when talking about something like video games it becomes very difficult to nail someone on being intentionally unfair. What each person finds fun is subjective and there are contexts. Did they just feel this kind of game has been over done? Did they rate similar recent titles the same way?  Did they just not like the way certain mechanics performed? Was the story lacking to them? Did the absence of Chloe from the story compel them to give the game the 6 out of 10 it deserved but they showed mercy and gave it an 8? Just for the record, I have no idea if Chloe is in the game or not.
