Yeah, less wait for new tech is just better. Still, they say they won't be making any exclusive games for this upgrade so it's not the same as a new generation

Quote from: the-Pi-guy on Apr 20, 2016, 05:07 PMPhones are very different from consoles.
People feel they need phones, the cell phone market is substantially larger than the console market.  You buy a phone, your sister buys a phone, your mom buys a phone, your dad buys a phone, your grandma buys a phone, etc.
People also don't really buy phones for games.  Do you think people go on buses and say guys, look at how amazing fruit ninja looks!
When it comes to phones, the appeal is more about the phone.  "Guys look at how huge the display on this is!"  Stuff like that.  Everyone buys a phone the same reason most people buy PCs.  They are useful, have tons of applications, and hey we can play a game if I want.

When people buy game consoles, it's more like DVD players.  Its focus is entertainment on a big screen.

This is kind of the opposite of the point.  For a lot of people, this is exactly why they are worried about the 4K.  Is our 400$ investment going to be completely worthless with a new system?

(While it sounds like Sony is absolutely ensuring that it's not the case, people are still going to worry about it.)

Now your assumption seems to be that instead of a PS5, we are going to basically get PS4.1, PS4.2, PS4.3, etc...

That doesn't seem to be what the situation here is. That doesn't seem to be what Sony is going for.  It seems like their intention right now is solely PS4K, a PS4 capable of 4K.  Doesn't stamp out the possibility that the PS5 will come out in 3 years, and we will see if it is backwards compatible.

Of course they haven't.  But most people that buy consoles don't like having to worry about multiple SKUs, decision making.  Just buying a console, and playing it for 5-6 years, until the next one comes out.
completely merit-less.  sony doesn't even need to mandate it (although i'm glad they are).  it was just a year ago gamers were complaining that too many games were releasing cross-gen and being held back by 10 year old technology.  ps3/4 is a waaaaaaaaaaaay harder port than ps4/ps4k and still developers were not willing to risk making a game next gen exclusive because games are waaay to expensive to target a userbase that small.

...with how marginal of an increase ps4 --> psk4 is.
...with how identical the architecture is.
..with how important user base is.

there is less than 0% chance ps4 doesn't get 100% of games releasing in the next 3 years until the next iteration of hardware launches.

if there is any risk at all it is that the ps4k doesn't receive any extra love to optimism for better performance than the ps4 version,.. especially from those small indie games.

Quote from: Legend on Apr 20, 2016, 05:23 PMIf that was the case, steam machines would be the solution.

They hit all your checkboxes much better than what micro generations could do.
i feel like you didn't read anything i wrote at all...

..steam machines are the exact worst mix of pc and console.  ps4k (and xbox one 2) is the exact best case scenario of offering customers cost effective plug 'n play gaming while erasing the uncertainty of a generational transition.

i mean seriously, start defending yourself here if you are soo in love with the old way of doing things:
1. why is so great to not be able to play your last generation games on your new generation hardware?
2. why is it so great to have the first year after a hardware release have months of software droughts?
3. why is it so great to invest in a hardware platform only to find out a year later that the wiiU is a flop, support died, and you wasted your money?
4. why is it so great as a developer to start a project 2 years before next gen hardware releases and have to guess about what the machine will look like, how powerful it will be, and when it will launch?
5. why is it so great as a developer to have to guess which platform will be successful next gen and possibly end up with a massive commercial failure because you guess wrong about the viability of the platform?
6. why is it so great to have to wait 7 years to be able to buy better hardware?
7. why is it so great to be forced to buy new hardware after only 7 years to play the games you want?
8. why is it so great to only be able to play game in  30fps when you would be willing to pay extra cash to have 60 fps?

I don't think you understand what steam machines are attempting   :P

They're plug and play consoles with a user experience almost exactly like PS4 or XBOX one. They boot directly into Steam big picture mode so you never see windows or feel the need to grab a mouse. It's highly rumored the xbox one 2 or whatever is just a Steambox that boots into the XBOX ui/Windows store instead of steam.

Without switching to a steambox like setup Sony would be forced to keep all hardware directly compatible with the generation before it.

  • That has nothing to do with micro generations, but rather how game software runs. Chances are a traditional PS5 would still be fully backwards compatible.
  • That drought exists no matter what. People use that word to refer to next gen games that push the system, not just the amount of available software. Otherwise droughts couldn't exist on systems that supported BC.
  • That would still happen too. If Nintendo switches to an iterative system and goes through a few years with hardly any hardware sales, they're still going to push out a fancy new system to try and attract more success. New games would support the previous system, but not necessarily yours.
  • That would still happen, but it'd be even worse. Devs pushing graphics always have to code for imaginary machines that are yet to exist.
  • Yes that's an improvement.
  • To people with cash to blow, it's an improvement.
  • Wouldn't be any different. New games would support the top 2/3 hardware versions, and after 7 years your system would lose support too.
  • To people with cash to blow, it's an improvement.

What would be better IMO is keeping generations but making different console versions for different display technology.

If you own a 1080p tv, buy the 1080p PS4. If you own a 4K tv, buy the PS4K. If you own a 3D tv, buy the PS4D.

Currently I think lots of problems come from the fact console generations and TV generations are out of sync.

Again back to my point, why buy an iterative ps4 instead of updating your gpu?  There's a reason to buy a console vs pc.  Iterative consoles isn't one of them.

steam machines are the worst of consoles and pc.   steam machines fail the idea of plug 'n play and here is the proof.

the audience for consoles cannot buy that.  it is too complicated.
the audience for pc won't buy it.  it is too locked down.

having 1 sku every three years the mainstream can digest. they cannot digest 50 skus in the first year.

the mainstream cannot "upgrade their gpu" any more than you (probably) can change your own oil in your car.  it is fudgy easy but almost no one is willing to even try to learn.

Your link is broken.

It's a bit too complicated atm, but the end goal is to get it simpler. I obviously didn't mean the steam machines today should be selling like hotcakes if your market understanding was correct.

The mainstream can handle 50 skus. Works fine for Android and works fine for PCs.

I fully understand how tech illiterate the mainstream is. Never disagreed about consoles needing to stay user friendly above all else.

However this conversation is moot. How do we even know the PS4K will be a mid gen upgrade? Maybe tomorrow Eurogamer will leak some news that clears things up.

Of course I know how to change my car's oil

i'm very glad to know that you know how to change your oil.  it elevates my opinion of you by 3.
