Psvr is number one in the hourly right now.

I want to see if it can sustain these pre orders. We already knew it would be very popular with the core group but we need to see how the mass market responds.

I can believe that.

Only question is if they expected initial demand to be really small or just kinda small.

Seeing as we are talking about actual hardware, it's a very different situation than disks.
Just look at the Oculus Rift, they are backordered 4 months and have been since the first week preorders went up.  Demand is obviously much much higher than they expected, it's not unreasonable to expect the same here.
They've only used that "excuse" twice, so I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt,

What you seem to have missed is that Golem is made by Highwire games which is made up of Halo devs (and infamous devs apparently) and was founded by the Bungie composer.
