I wonder if that's enough for its budget?

Didn't they need +8M for the previous one?
50m dev + 50m marketing
Surely they cut down on the marketing for this one but I doubt the game itself was cheaper, so still a 50-80m budget.

Answer is no.

Sequels are usually a lot cheaper.

Examples? All franchises I know have been getting more expensive. Uncharted, Halo, etc. GOW ascension was also more expensive than GOW3.

No that's what they expected to sell.
It broke even after ~5m.
Also game development is usually cheaper for sequels.

I'm sure they got something for being timed exclusive as well.

They still have PS4 version to come out, and PC should do well.
Crazy that they didn't release the PS4 version at the same time.

Not sequel to sequel, just first to sequel.

First game with a new IP takes a lot more engine work and is more of a shot in the dark.

True about the last part but what I've seen is that despite that the first game is still cheaper
U 3 > U 2 > U 1 again as an example

It's probably due to certain factors like:
- new/improved technology that costs more (didn't ROTR use a new mocap method for Lara that was unique for its time/now? It was tweeted about last year)
- key staff being paid more than in the previous game (job market competition)

He give a good example... U1 was cheaper than U2/U3.

But I'm sure U3 was cheaper than U2... U2 was the most expensive.

Uncharted 2 cost the same though. :P

Uncharted 2 has budget of $20 million, says Wells | VG247
Uncharted sequel to cost USD 20 million • Eurogamer.net

All I got for Uncharted 3 is 25m.
GTA 5 Cost $265 Million To Develop And Market

A sequel can be cheaper
-Engine already built
-Art is usually mostly figured out, just may get tweaks

But if the game is very successful then the company may feel urged to spend a lot more to make the game as good as it can be.

Jak and Daxter - ($14m)
Jak II - JaD was pretty successful, let's pump more into it - ($15m)
Jak 3 - JII was not very successful, let's back up a little - ($10m)

Uncharted 1 - ($20m)
Uncharted 2 - U1 was pretty successful - ($20m)
Uncharted 3 - U2 was very successful, more funding - ($25m)
Uncharted 4 - Uncharted series has been very successful, more funding!

Rorono

OK..but as you can see usually not cheaper. And even when it is, it's a small difference. We're still talking about >50M for ROTR with marketing, even if dev was less than the previous 50.

Pretty sure the U1 number doesn't include engine development cost.

There's an Uncharted 2 dev video I remember seeing where they talked about how U2 was like half the cost of U1. I'm trying to see if I can find it.

Max King of the Wild

Irrelevant which uncharted cost more. Uncharted didn't have online. Cut that from U2 and I'm sure it would be cheaper
