I'm thinking PS4 can manage 7 million for November + December this year if everything goes right for it, so it might beat one of those PS2 years.

That'll be an interesting battle to watch though.

Thanks.

Microsoft recently confirmed during one of their investor briefings that they would be taking the emphasis away from absolute sales figures and focusing more on engagement KPI's such as the number of active Xbox Live users and the number of hours spent using Xbox applications. Microsoft believe that using these KPI's will help provide investors with a more accurate view of how the Xbox brand is doing and how engagement is increasing thanks to the launch of Windows 10 on PC & Console.

Ultimately it is a way for them to stop sharing sell in or sell through figures for the console. Similar to how Sony stopped reporting on PS3 sales in FY2012 and Vita sales in FY2014. At the end of the day it's up to Microsoft to decide what they want to share with us and based on their latest PR last week about NPD it seems fairly clear that even if their sales are up year on year they may not give a number as they did in previous reports, instead choosing to focus on Xbox Live engagement numbers.

There is no doubt that the PlayStation 4 is considerably ahead of the Xbox One and continues to outsell the XB1 worldwide.

EA actually increased this to 52m-53m very recently.

I believe their original number was around 49m from 6 months ago. So it's great to see that they believe both consoles will perform better by the end of the year.

The IHS report that I referenced earlier suggested 34 million PS4's and 20 million XB1's, however it is likely that the PS4 number will have been revised up.
I'm referring to amiibo festival and Mario tennis.

Quote from: Raven on Dec 13, 2015, 08:35 PMFor now it will be difficult for PS4 to exceed those PS2 sales records. Xbox One is strong competition for PlayStation 4 in North America and Japan isn't eating up consoles like they used to. There is a chance that 2016 will change all of that. The huge amount of big name JRPGs releasing next year, a bloated exclusive release schedule for PS4, and a reduced price for the entire year could drive up PS4 demand in those regions significantly. If Japan jumps back on the console train and Xbox One falls behind in North America that could put the PS4 in a position to at least come close to PS2 sales records. Give it good enough deals or bundles and it could surpass it. PSVR may also help. If VR succeeds in generating mass interest it could help bump sales because of those looking for a more accessible and possibly cheaper option that's well supported.

Agreed. I think 2002 and 2003 will not be achievable but perhaps 2001 can be achieved. Let me supplement this thought with some additional data.

The holidays have always been very strong for Sony, and all platform holders really. It's always when we see a huge boost in sales and traditionally December used to take the overwhelming bulk of sales but in the past decade or so we've seen November and Black Friday become more and more important, even going as far as to take sales away from December. So with that said I still believe that December will be a bigger month in the U.S. than November but I'm not sure if we're going to see a huge increase like we used to during the PS2 era. So including Canada, I believe that sales in North America over November and December could reach 3.5 million units which would be remarkable. This would be up on PS2's 2001 sales of 2.8m during Nov & Dec 2001, but down on the 4m units sold during Nov & Dec 2002.

Europe & PAL regions have really increased their share this generation, and Asia is seeing huge growth in hardware sales compared to the PS3 and PS2 era. During Holiday 2001 the PS2 sold 2.7 million units in these regions and during Holiday 2002 the PS2 sold over 3.4 million. Both times the sales in Europe & PAL regions were less than North America. However I believe that the importance of these regions has grown in recent years and whilst PS4 holiday sales in these regions may not exceed North American sales, I would expect sales to be similar at the very least.

Japan was huge for the PS2 accounting for just under 1.2 million units during Nov & Dec 2001 and over 0.9m units in Nov & Dec 2002. Sales in 2014 weren't even close and were just over 200k iirc. I don't expect Japan to play any significant role in this years holiday sales and I don't much expect sales to be over that 200k by much.

Therefore I would say that it is very possible that Holiday sales for PlayStation 4 this year could exceed the 6.9m units that the PS2 sold in Holiday 2001. However I believe that the decline of the Japanese console market will be one of the reasons why the PS4 will not beat the Holiday 2002 record.

Then again I'm the same guy who said PS4 + XB1 wouldn't sell more than 2.2m in the US this November (they sold 2.8m) so I may be horrendously wrong again (haha)

Lets just say that Splatoon's first month at retail was considerably higher than both Amiibo Festival and Mario Tennis combined.

Also Yokai Watch didn't do very well at all.

Apart from the performance of Splatoon, Super Mario Maker and Super Smash Brothers for Wii U/3DS, it was a very poor month for Nintendo.

Edit: Also just to say that Splatoon has actually performed very well for a new IP on a low install base console.

Xbox ahead without bundles, PS4 ahead overall.

Fallout 4  looks like they were about even including bundles.
PS4 - 1.26
XBO - 1.278

Really tiny lead.

Tomb Raider numbers are awful.
176k on Xbox One.  :o

Yes still a win by Sony considering the massive lead xbox would have had in the US just a few years ago.

Quote from: Mmm_fish_tacos on Dec 14, 2015, 04:07 AMokay, then tell me about it.

Well the game sold only 350k on ps3 in the U.S. but almost 4 times as much on the Xbox 360.

Really shows how 360 became the home of Call of Duty early on. Now it's the PS4 version that is selling more.

Oh btw. Smash sold 50k this month. I notice cream did not leak that.
