I'm withholding judgement until we hear more details about how FFVII will be split up. My initial reaction was also negative, but the idea isn't so bad if executed well. Maybe Crisis Core and Advent Children will be tied into the remake. Who knows?

Turn based is still my favorite.
Final Fantasy X, and Super Mario RPG are turn based, love them both.
I think I could honestly say that I prefer turn based over real time for this type of RPG.

SMRPG did it best, because you still had to interact at all times.  It wasn't just hit a button watch it do something.  Hit another button, do something else.

The assumption that a lot of people seem to make is that turn based is archaic.  That somehow we reach new heights of technology and old gameplay is outdated.  This doesn't really make sense to me.  It's like what?  Hey, the PS1 is capable of 3D graphics, 2D is now outdated.  Stop making 2D games everyone.  20 years later we have
-Yoshi's New Island
-New Super Mario Bros U
-Shovel Knight
-Super Meat Boy
-Super Mario Maker
-Super Smash Bros.
-etc
-lots of fighters, platformers
-lots of indie games
-still a bunch of big publisher games
-etc

All that in the past 5 years.  What are these people thinking?  Don't they know that 2D is outdated?
It's just silly thinking to me that something like a way to play, an art style, etc could become archaic/outdated.

Besides that, a lot of the market isn't going to get excited for FFVII no matter what happens.  A lot of these people play CoD every year, or Fifa, etc, they don't play any Japanese games outside of maybe Mario and Pokemon.  So the assumption that updating the game, so that these people might be more interested in the game just isn't going to happen, it's built on a false premise.  Most of the people, certainly not all though,  that are interested in the game, are likely going to be interested in it regardless of whether it stays turn based or goes this more real time game style.

Sounds Like The Final Fantasy VII Remake Will Be Episodic (UPDATE)
QuoteAs a gaming experience, each entry will have the volume of content equal to a full-sized game.

I have this feeling that they're going to release 3 60$ games.

Well the following games should be easier to develop because Square will have much of the assets in place.

You and your weird HD Remaster hype. :D

(Also Persona 5 is too low on this list, it should be the untouchable number 1 :P)

Square confirms Final Fantasy VII Remake will be bigger than the original game | GamesBeat | Games | by Mike Minotti

Quote"For instance, players will be able to explore many different areas of Midgar in this game that they couldn't access in the original —  if we're remaking this world, we want to add in areas like this and depict them with real detail," the translated interview from Square Enix attributed to Final Fantasy VII Remake's director Tetsuya Nomura. "Of course, there may be parts that are cut from the original for various reasons, but with all the new depiction that we're adding to the game and the level of detail we're incorporating, the overall amount of content is only going to increase."
