What's the actual reason behind this?

Spencer wants to paint a happy picture where there should be no console wars.  Yet he refuses to do cross play with ps4.

Sucks for Xbox owners who will be excluded from 90% of the community.

It's just business.  
Can't convince people to buy your friends system, if you can buy a PS4 instead to play with them.

Which was even more important last gen when Xbox Live was charging $60 a year and playing on PSN was free. That would have made justification for charging even harder to explain.

That's almost working against them. If they allowed cross platform play then friends would have to buy the same console as their other friends. IF one or two people really loved xbox exclusives but play cod with a group of people that got PlayStation they'll have no choice but to buy PlayStation.

I've been saying, its a big reason the PS4 is doing so well.

stupid, really stupid. majority of players are on PS4, and a huge portion is on PC. Rocket League is all about a thriving community, this wont help the XB1 version.

Nothing they could do, MS blocks cross platform on all xb1 games unfortunately.

It's because MS wants developers to use their servers. It's because of this policy that FFXIV isn't coming to the XBO. I think it has also played a role in SFV not coming to the XBO either.

its stupid from MS, not the devs. MS are not doing themself any favors with blocking this from Cross Platform play. XB1 version just become the worst version to buy from all 3 platforms this is on. and it can say bye bye to any hope of E-sports using it as the go to console
