Quote- a Sony representative told the WIRED the following via email:

"We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation,"

"We have nothing further to comment at this point in time."

 It is happening!

Digital Foundry took a look at how Super Star Wars, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, Star Wars: Racer Revenge and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter ran through emulation and they found the following results:

The big question is if we can pop in a PS2 disc and the PS4 can emulate the game without much difficulty. It would be awesome if I can play SSX3 that way.

As I was saying in the Playstation thread, it's going to be unlikely.  GPU based emulation won't be able to emulate the nuances of the PS2's setup properly.  Most post processing effects would most likely be gone.

To you? Well, that tells something

But honestly, how could anything be really a surprise by now. Disc-based emulation of PS2 and perhaps PS1? Good. A little unexpected but it's not that people will be completely surprised by this. The only thing that could happen is that PS2 prices for games will rise on ebay.

I like teasing, like our exchange yesterday, you gotta have fun sometimes or what's the point.

Hopefully the prices won't increase too much for older games, some already are pretty expensive, but then you have games like ico / shadow of the colossus that dropped majorly in price for PS2 versions when the PS3 ico+sotc remaster released.

They had better start selling CECHZM1's for cheap or the ones already sold are going to shoot up in resale price.

Does that mean the PS4 will get Dragon Quest 8 before the 3DS? :P

Now I get the feeling it might even get PSP BC as well!

Maybe, Vita TV has most likely recently discontinued (They started appearing half price, or less at retailers here in Canada a few months ago).  It'd make sense for Sony to just get rid of that division and let handheld titles work on the PS4.  Not like they're going to make a new handheld, or maybe just make a handheld for Japan.  I mean, it looks like Japan is taking full advantage of the PS4/Vita releases.

Hopefully that's for adding trophy support, and not having to emulate on a per game basis...

Hopefully. :P
Sony should be able to make a far better emulator than anyone else, they've got all the documentation and everything for the PS2.

It's not so cut and dry.  The emulator that shipped with the PS3 seems to have been based off of a pc emulator.  Even as they were fixing the emulator for PSN releases, they never bothered to update it.  So disc based games that were glitchy remained glitchy, while their PSN counter-parts were fixed (Graphics too).
