I don't even think this was scrapped. We're talking about a promotional campaign that continued right up to release. That whole "Hunt the Truth" podcast also didn't even have much to do with who Chief was in a way that makes sense for this game and if you've read the books you already know who he is. Telling his origin story right before Guardians didn't make any sense at all. There really isn't anything that happens in the game where you'll go, "Oh! That's why it was important for me to remember what happened to him when he was 6!". There's also pretty much no way you can shove a DLC story into this and have it make sense for what the marketing campaign was.
