DESTINY CROWNED KING

21/Sep/2015
Launched on Tuesday, 'Destiny: The Taken King' is crowned No1 this week.

It gives Activision Blizzard their first All Formats top spot since 'Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare' in W6 2015. The PS4 version claims a 57% share, Xbox One 34%, Xbox 360 7% and PS3 2%. A major expansion for a game released just over a year ago, launch sales of 'The Taken King' represent 16% of the original's debut. There are also new entries at No2 and No3 with 'Forza Motorsport 6' starting its engines at No2 and 'Pro Evolution Soccer 2016' kicking off at No3. 'Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain' (-54%) gets knocked off No1, dropping to No4, ahead of 'Mad Max' (-45%) at No5 and 'Super Mario Maker' (-58%) at No6. 'Grand Theft Auto V' (+3%) is a non-mover at No7, while 'Disney Infinity 3.0' (-18%) is forced down 4 places to No8.
There are 2 more new titles that make the Top 40 this week, 'Rugby League Live 3' from Alternative Software scrums down at No9 in time for the start of the Rugby World Cup, while EA's 'NHL 16' starts life at No15. Xbox One retailer hardware bundling gives a boost to 'Call of Duty: Ghosts' (+124%), up from No24 to No14 and 'Titanfall' (+265%), a re-entry at No25.

Notes:

Destiny TTK: 64k (PS4 36k, XB1 22k)
22k<Forza 6<36k (huge decline over forza 5 which did about 60k first week)
PES>21,700

So Destiny not anywhere near as high as some had hoped. Forza did absolutely awfully, PES not doing great either. I'm very impressed by Until Dawn's legs but the numbers will still be low.

Pretty bad week really.

Dr. Pezus

Wut, Destiny quite low. BUT at least digital sales were huge on PS4.

Forza 6 wowza. Should have some legs in the UK though

Forza 4 managed over 100k first week, that franchise is really going downhill. In fact all racing game franchises are now, which is very sad to see. This makes Driveclub's sales even more impressive, really.

Will be interesting to see if it declines in the US too. Wouldn't be surprised, since 5 launched with the launch hype

Aura7541

Yeah, the Forza series is in a decline. It's hard to say about Gran Turismo when its last iteration was released on the PS3 right after the PS4's launch.

The racing sim genre isn't that big in the US and considering the similarities between the UK and US, I think the same thing will happen.

This is what happens when you push out a Forza game every year. IT get olds and no one get's excited for them. Honestly it's a joke the Forza has caught up with GT in number.  Forza Should be on 4 at best by now. Over saturation has kill it's market.

Even though the mainline Forza and Horizon are different, the average consumer probably doesn't see it that way and gets the impression that Forza is an annualized franchise. Microsoft really needs to change the release model and release a new Forza every three years or something.

Meanwhile, Gran Turismo 7 will likely outsell Forza 5, 6, and Horizon 2 combined...

Forza and Horizon are different, but that's kinda like how COD from infinity ward is different from COD from Treyarch. Still feels super saturated.

I wonder if GT6 hurt the series significantly.

Gran Turismo 6 came out at a really weird time and didn't review as well as GT5. I felt that it sold less than its predecessors because it launched right after the PS4 and GT fans didn't like it that much.

If GT7 turns out really well, then the series will be revitalized, in my opinion. Also, unlike Forza, GT is huge in e-sports.

Destiny sold OVER 400k in UK... that was the minimum.

TTK did great because these are new users, LE shift editions alone.

All the others players (more than launch) made upgrade via digital.

TTK sales are only for new players and shift for LE/CE editions.
Everybody upgraded via digital.

Forza needs to stop the 2 years release... bad sales.

Also GT sells better the first time.
