The dedicated PC community is not as big as you think, it's just the ones that are there are extremely vocal which makes it seem like there's a ton of them.
Legend made me remove this. Everybody riot.

Fact!

But this saddens me because I want 4k to become a standard for devs in time for the PS5 in 6+ years from now.

4k on pc would want to get from 0.4% to over 20% by then.  Other hardware factors too but I'm praying the pc industry advances this tech enough over the next 5 years.

Steam has well over 125 million users.
This means ~47.5 million gamers are playing at 1080p or higher.
That also doesn't consider any gamers that don't use Steam.  Which might be fairly common, particularly for MMOs.

Many people have multiple steam accounts.  But even if there was 47million this gen already has 47m and increasing rapidly.

Yes some might not have steam but a similar if not smaller % likely applies to them.

The point is two thirds don't even game at 1080p. It's not a master race but more like the human race with super rich,  very poor and a good chunk in-between.

How is it not a master race if they still have the ability to play at 1080p?

What they choose matters not.

They don't all have the choice.  That's the point and many can but the game will suffer badly in other aspects.

There are still lots of people outside of Steam that likely have pretty good rigs.
The other point is that there are lots of PC gamers.  Even at 1080p, there's a marketshare that rivals the next gen consoles. And that's just from Steam, doesn't include anyone who doesn't have steam.  MMO players, the handful of Origin, Uplay only users.

@bold, obviously.  That has always been the case.  There's no surprising data here.  Nobody has said anything to the contrary about that, except for a few that are likely mistaken in their guesses, along with fanboys.

The market at least offers the option to do so.

You're wrong when you say a few fanboys.  In reality it's a shame ton of fanboys.

Obviously the market offers the choice but it's expensive and a lot of hassle compared to just buying a $400 box.

The whole point of this is to point out that a big majority of PC gamers dont even play at 1080p. Which shows you how the average pc is actually weak.

Yes there are people without steam but the % of those who play at 1080p will be roughly the same.  It's a mute point because we're talking percentages here not total number.

But if you want to talk total numbers it will be surpassed by ps4/x1/wii u next year.  their combined will be over 60million early 2016 and by the end of 2016 I'd guess around 90million.

In a few short years that's crazy numbers but again it's not the point.  (%)

I didn't say a few fanboys, few was a descriptive word for the previous phrase.  I didn't specify any number for fanboys.  "Few that are mistaken, along with fanboys."

Which is a point I think everyone here knows and agrees with.

how much does that 34% spend on games?

It's really not that big of a hassle. It doesn't take a very strong PC to run games at 1080p

I wonder how many PS4 gamers play at 1080p?
