When does xb1 get officially discontinued in japan? It won't even break 100k even if it had a five year lifespan

They would need to sell through their initial shipment first.

Probably not until the gen is over. The price of keeping it in a few select stores would probably be cheaper than the price of bad pr.

I thought that applied to China unless it also applies to Japan.

I'm probably overestimating retailer's expectations, but I can't imagine it was less than 50K. Microsoft was 'trying' to get Japan at least decent this gen.

They won't stop until they sell exactly xbox one hundred in a week.  That is it's purpose.

Their loss is a much needed gain for Sony.  Sony will gain a few 100k (possibly close to a million)  former 360 owners that buy mainly western games like the witcher,  batman,  cod,  star wars,  destiny etc.

If the xbox one improved on the 360 growth you can bet ps4 western games in Japan wouldn't be doing so well.  Sony were wise to nail down many western games as Japan exclusives .

Kill off the xbox before it even gets a chance.  All the millions Microsoft invested in the xbox throughout the 2 previous gens all firmly down the drain.

The talk about the XBO and Japan reminds me of the "Microsoft is skipping Tokyo Game Show" thread on GAF. A bunch of us and Kagari discussed about MS's actions in Japan, which included their JRPG push early in the 360's lifecycle. We actually theorized that MS's end goal with that push was not to make the 360 an appealing console to the Japanese audience.

It was quite suspicious that after FFXIII came out, MS pulled the plug. Prior to that, the 360 got JRPGs like Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, Star Ocean IV, The Last Remnant and Tales of Vesperia. Even though the PS3 consistently outsold the 360 in Japan, the MS managed to play keep-away with a bunch of these games.

FFXIII, a game that was originally announced as a PS3-exclusive, became multiplat and I think it was all thanks to MS's early JRPG push. Square Enix thought their game would sell well on the 360 and it didn't do so bad on the platform. It was a huge win for MS because they knew that the PS3 would have overtaken the 360 a lot sooner had FFXIII been exclusive to the former.

This gen, the XBO is getting KH3 and FFXV as well as timed exclusivity for Rise of the Tomb Raider. SE thought that based on the performance of the 360 and their games on the system, their future games will do well on the XBO. However, this was planned out before this generation began. Other Japanese 3rd party publishers/developers have ignored the XBO such as Bandai Namco, Koei Tecmo, and Atlus because XBO gamers just don't buy Japanese games. Even Square Enix is skipping the XBO with games like DQ Heroes, Star Ocean 5, World of FF, Nier 2, and FFVII: Re.

I think after KH3 and FFXV, the XBO will not see another KH or FF title. The ratio of the PS4 and XBO versions of Type-0 is 9 to 1 and that ratio will only get higher.
