General non gamers love the idea about becoming multi-millionaires with the perfect game idea, but that practically never happens. On the mobile side it's pretty much just a lottery to see who's uber successful and on the console side I can only think of a few modern games that could fit.

Minecraft
Rocket League
PUBG

Can you think of more examples of games that came from relatively unknown devs yet sold 10 million+ copies?

League of legends?
God of War. Yup, SSM were barley known and God of War is what made them huge. It didn't sell 10 million copies but it was big.

Are we able to include Naughty Dog?  I don't think anyone knew who they were before Crash, which sold 7 some million.

If you go back to the PS1 days and earlier it's definitely a lot more common. Most of those games came from first time studios.

Yeah.  Especially with Steam having so many games, it's hard to compete the way one used to.

BananaKing

Maybe DayZ or WarZ, which ever one wasn't the rip off

Ohh and also Ark Survival evolved. Despite it being a mess of a game, it's still sold shame loads.

Don't forget Arma!
