Prepper:
a person who believes a catastrophic disaster or emergency is likely to occur in the future and makes active preparations for it, typically by stockpiling food, ammunition, and other supplies.

I was recently re-reviewing the data around climate change and the data is really, really scary.  I'm starting to think it's time to stop worrying about convincing humanity to  prevent climate change and start worrying about how to survive climate change.  basically i'm worried about an environmental disaster event that is big enough to create a world in which gas/electricity is not a guarantee and therefore nor is access to food and water.

i don't want to be one of those full on crazy nut jobs but at the same time the risk seems to me to be credible and real.  i think i'm going to start honing my wilderness survival skills (i was a boy scout so i'm already kind of trained) and build up my emergency supplies.

anyone else crazy like me?

I wouldn't worry too much about it right now. Still got aways  to go.. it never hurts to learn new skills.

No I don't live in Florida or Louisiana.  I don't have to worry about climate change as much.

Those poor people....

I always had this thought that if I was ever ridiculously rich, like Bill Gates times Bill Gates rich, I'd build super massive fallout shelters large enough to live comfortably and basically be able to hold everyone.
Ah, to be 8 again.

Kitler lives in Chicago

I live in Colorado so except for a yellowstone eruption, any event wouldn't mean immediate death. Can flee to the mountains and live off nature I guess.

Don't think climate change is that severe. It's an incredibly pressing issue, but we certainly have more than 5 years before regular day to day life can't continue.

i think you underestimate how frail society could be.

without power you won't have indoor water.  without water you have only a few days to live.  grocery stores need to be restocked almost daily to keep up with demand and in the event of an emergency there would be a run on supplies.  it's great, legend, to say you could live off of nature but could you really do it?  do you know how to find clean water, food, start a fire, ect.  i've been camping with friends and i've been surprised to find out how soft people are these days.  i'm not that rugged but i did go though boy scouts i guess,.. i was amazed to see my friends struggle to make a fire with both matches and kerosene available to them.

i dunno.  i'm not crazy (thanks Pi :P) but i am worried.  i'm pretty frugal with my finances because i pride myself on being self reliant and prepared for the future and the potential emergencies that could arise.  i think it's time to hone my wilderness survival skills.  also i'm going to try and build myself a garden next year to grow (some of) my own food.

I'm an Eagle scout and I live a few blocks away from a drinking reservoir. Biggest threat to me would be other people. Realistically I'd probably die pretty quickly in an apocalyptic scenario just because I lack guns and would trust people.

Can fully relate to you and your friends camping. The first time I went camping without boy scouts was an eye opener.

Gardens are nice since they benefit you even when times are good. I have a peach tree and rhubarb but that's it for edibles.

I could, I can shoot, hunt, fish, grow food, source and clean water. Not to mention I can build just about anything. The only thing that would suck for me is sleeping on the ground. Never been able to do it for more than a weekend. I'll just have to drag a mattress along with me.

Like I said It's good to learn and develop skills. But I wouldn't go stocking up on food or anything. Even more so if you live in the city. If something goes down the city will be the first to fall. I'd want to be quick and nimble to get away from a city as quickly as possible.  People would be killing each other in the streets in under 24 hours. At least I wouldn't stock more than my car could hold. Maybe take trips to a remote location you could scout out, if something were to go south. At least you'd know the area and could plan a defense.

a fellow eagle scout!!  i knew there must be a reason i like you.

yeah,.. i don't want a gun either.  i'm going to to other stuff for know but maybe i'll get a gun someday.

peaches won't grow here.  i was looking into it and sour cherries seem like the best option for chicago.  we had rubard this year but that was just a happy surprise from the previous owner.

i mean if i knew exactly what was going to happen this wouldn't be a question.  but evidence seems to point to abrupt global changes have occurred in the past.

so maybe something like all of the melting ice causes a sudden shift in ocean currents that causes a sudden shift in the wind currents / weather that causes all of 1 years crops to fail on a global scale.  if people start staring civil unrest is more or less a guarantee.

Lol.
The wall is bad for environment, thinking global warming is a hoax is bad for the environment.
