NeoGAF - View Single Post -  Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

Quote
QuoteSony is currently planning a new version of the PS4 with increased graphical power and games running at 4K resolution, developer sources tell Kotaku.  We don't know whether current PS4 owners will be able to upgrade or if they'll have to buy an entirely new device to benefit from this power boost, but from what we hear, Sony has started briefing developers. Based on conversations with developers who have spoken with Sony, this 'PS4.5' will include an upgraded GPU both to support high-end 4K resolution for games and add more processing power that can enhance the games supported by PlayStation VR, the headset Sony will launch this fall. It's unclear if 'PS4.5' is an official name or just a nickname that developers have been using. One developer jokingly called it the 'PS4K' while telling me about the device. In layman's terms, 4K resolution is around twice the pixel size of 1080p, which is the current standard for games on PlayStation 4 and competing consoles. The current PS4 can output 4K photos and videos, but cannot support 4K resolutions for games. With this upgrade, it would. Besides resolution, developers would have an opportunity to push more effects and other graphical tweaks to make their games look better, thanks to the new GPU.

Wow. Sounds like much more of an upgrade than I expected.

If they target this towards PC gamers as a premium product but keep the current PS4 as the "true" PS4 then I could see this being successful. Otherwise it could really hurt the PS4's momentum.

What I would want from a device like this:

- Do not make the original PS4 obsolete, having certain or even all games not work on the original PS4 because of this would be hugely annoying.
- Make the thing "backwards compatible" by which I don't mean have it play PS3 games, but have it also improve already existing PS4 games, this would likely need work on the devs part though, so I don't see how viable it is.
- Instead of going from 1080p/30fps or 900p/30fps to 4k/30fps go to 1080p/60fps with short load times etc. or at least give the option, I don't have a 4k TV and currently don't see a reason, nor have any interest in getting one (I do see how that's a little egoistical though :P)
- Have an upgrade plan in place where you can get the new PS4 for no more than $150 max, if you already own a normal PS4.

Gaf is on fire about this. It was a 2 page thread when I posted this one. Now it's 26 pages.

i highly doubt it will be an add-on.

it will be like the iphone 6 and iphone 6S. it will be forward/backward compatible to a certain extent. it is the same thing ms is doing.

Sounds more of a PS5 than a PS4.5, if you ask me.

I'll believe it when I see it.

4k? Sounds like battleship to me. That would be a next gen jump right there.

Yeah I could see this being $599.

Not buying it. Would be an incredibly stupid move for Sony. They just released PS4 a little over 2 years ago and now they're trying to convince people to buy a $400 VR headset. They announce new hardware any time soon and that will likely derail everything they've regained. It could actually kill PSVR at this point.

Having known about this for a couple of weeks, I think Kotaku is wrong on the 4k gaming part.

From what I've heard it's slightly better spec PS4 to help with PS VR performance but none of the upgrades are accessible for normal game development.

But then that's just what I've been told. I'd say it's fairly reliable. But I could be totally wrong.

Kotaku may have broken leaks that ended up being true in the past, but they're also not high on my list of responsible journalism, either. I can't imagine any console right now running games at 4K and being affordable and that also assumes that enough people right now have 4K TVs to make any use of that. I also can't imagine Sony having gone through all this trouble, finding success with the PS4 like they have, and then thinking it's a good idea to introduce new hardware of any kind that could cause confusion and irritation among its playerbase. If anything, I think this is more a case of the truth getting distorted the more mouths it passes through.

Enough power to do 4K gaming is something I expect from a next generation of console hardware in 2020. I don't even think it makes much sense for Sony to release a different console to help with VR performance. Especially after how much they've tried to convince us that this whole thing will work as it is now. I think this is Sony getting ideas for the next console down the line and either throwing people off so it doesn't get reported as what they're doing for the PS5 or some developers getting the wrong idea or making jokes based on what they've been briefed on.

It's pretty funny that Kotaku's article got published just before Gawker lost its case against Hulk Hogan.

That said, I agree with you on the distortion. There's a reason no one else is picking up on this "news", not even N4G. I feel that Kotaku caught wind of the PS5's specs, but decided to spice the content up by claiming that it's a PS4.5 for the sake of getting more clicks.
