Neither can a smart phone, they can still do VR.

was the original question not in regards to this product which is "tethered to a PC (and a powerful one at that) to work".  this article talks about having tried other VR devices and although this one looks the same this one is "a game changer".  i don't know why you guys are giving me shame for re-stating what was explicitly written in the article... unless you think there is no difference between the HTC Vive and google cardboard.   i mean, i know smartphones can run games but there is a big difference between infinity blade and uncharted..

The difference between this and google cardboard is the quality of the vr glasses themselves, not just the applications running on them.

Yes Uncharted looks so much better than infinity blade. For gamers and the like, we're going to need either PS4s or PCs to run our desired VR content. For virtual tourism, education, and even lots of vr games, the graphics are not the selling point.

maybe not for education but virtual tourism is probably even more demanding that our current games expectation.  i'm not going to rome via VR if the poly count is in the teens...  and a "google street view" implementation of virtual tourism is not something anyone would get excited about VR for.

Well, you should. Or you can trust yourself and look at comparable VR's like Samsung's and Sony's. Neither requires much power.

I think the Vive looks bad compared to the other headsets, but that's a cool feature.
Hopefully it works!

You know how kinect 1.0 works by shooting out the little laser dots and then seeing them with the infrared camera? This has the camera on the head , but then the tracker somewhere stationary in the room. Allows tons of mobility.
