I think next gen Playstation (PS5) and Xbox (Xbox Two or whatever) needs backwards compatibility. Now you guys think, nope. With PS Now, Xbox's streaming service and digital purchases why do new consoles require backwards compatibility. Here are my points.
1. Tomb raider: DE and TLoU: R proved that if the game is good (which is obvious) and good port then people will buy it regardless of playing / owning it in older systems.
2. With backwards compatibility you can already have huge library open for you new system. It will give a competitive boost.
3. When a new system launches "frequent buyers" will buy it and abandon older platforms. These so called "frequent buyers" are main driving force of the industry. We can see PS360 games are suffering because these buyers went to PS4 and Xbox One.
The thing is Sony and Microsoft "needs to do". But whether they "implement it" is another thing. But if they do it then it will be beneficial for next gen console business.
