Programing wise, it's only a google replacement imo.

Like I needed to set up an email Sieve to copy all incoming mail to one inbox. I don't even know what Sieve is. But instead of googling it, I can get the three lines I need and be done.

You said this a few months ago, but I was writing a related post - so I thought I'd add on. 

I've said I feel like AI is like 80% there, with the caveat that the 20% is a lot - maybe even more meaningful than the first 80% in some instances.
 
I think I'd say the best use case for AI, where it's the best value add, is as a better search engine.

There are some niche topics, where even when I've known what I was talking about, google was kind of worthless. Like I keep thinking about this college Junior year Linear Algebra class (as opposed to the easier one), where I was looking up some of the math terms and google being very useless. 

AI is actually really good, when you're not even sure what you'd want to google. 

Most of the other uses, are not consistently good enough.

I think this is still very true.

AI is very good at searching, I would say because it can pull synonyms and it can make corrections that google search isn't capable of. 

If I google "I'm looking for an indie dev studio that has a name something like Vision Tech"
If I were looking for Vision Tech the indie game developer, Google has no clue what I'm talking about.

Whereas from "I'm looking for an indie dev studio that has a name something like Vision Tech"
Gemini immediately gives me:

"You are likely looking for VizionEck LLC, an independent video game development studio. [1]

About VizionEck LLC

• The Studio: It is a solo indie studio run by developer Mike Armbrust.
• Design Philosophy: The studio focuses on highly experimental mechanics, minimal art styles, and physics-based puzzle geometry that trust player intelligence. [1, 2, 3]"

Actually this is one of those funky things where the Google Search AI also doesn't know what I'm talking about. When I go into Gemini, it knows exactly what I'm talking about. 







A lot of the other stuff is cool. Generating stories, images and videos, but I always feel like things are missing.  Or in some cases, I feel like I'm spending more effort trying to get things close.

There are some other good uses. Like speech to text, upscaling video isn't practical without AI.

But as I've said before, I don't think AI is on the level that a lot of people believe it to be.

I think it's genuinely useful for things like search, or things that require a lot of pattern matching.

I should add, that even the really big models have those issues. It's hard to fake creativity, consistency and coherency at the same time for these models.

it's true but it's funny to hear you say it.  you've been soo enthusiastic about AI over the years.

but yeah, searching a mountain of thousands of documents and finding the 3-5 paragraphs of useful information in different locations and smushing it together?  AI is just great. 

but then the more people that use it the less people that will make the information that AI needs because there is no $$ in it.  it will take a while but it will be a downward spiral of enshitification for the entire internet.

And it's kinda like this xkcd meme. LLMs are revolutionary and will change the world as we know it, but like every past revolutionary new tech they still have limits.

A lot of the old "virtually impossible" is now easy, but there is still plenty of virtually impossible.

I think math and physics will be where it really starts going crazy. Where you can just say "solve this problem in isolation" and it either makes progress or it doesn't. Not like programing where it might misunderstand what is intended.
