Quote from: BananaKing on Sep 30, 2025, 01:21 AMThe PIF owns just 10% of this.

I'd be a lot more concerned about the debt they have than the Saudi involvement. I bet over 95% of the people complaining about the Saudi involvement have never eben been to the country
The ~9.9% is before this acquisition.

Don't need to be somewhere to think what they're doing is wrong.

Why is it wrong?

the only thing EA touches that I actually love is hazelight studios but my understanding is hazelight is independant and EA merely publishes.   So if things at EA go south I'd bet they could easily find another publisher with how succesful they have been lately.

Not them buying.
But Saudi Arabia has a long list of human rights violations.

Murdering Jamal Khashoggi
Mohammad bin Nasser al-Ghamdi was sentenced to death for criticizing leadership.

Shall I start with the human rights violations that USA did? What about genocide of the native Americans? Slavery? The Japanese concentration camps during WW2? The war in Iraq? Supporting Israel committing genocide? How many times has the US usurped, taken down, funded coups or riots in countries they had no right to meddle with? Actually how many human rights violations has ICE committed just in this past year?  How many human rights violations did the UK commit? France? Italy? Russia? China? Australia?

You can't be concerned about human rights violations from one country and then completely absolve and turn a blinds eye about others. Your argument falls flat out on it's face. And the subtle yet powerful notion that the west has intrinsically  higher morals and ethics which is driven through everytime somebody "express's concern" about human rights violations from an Asian or African country is laughable, due to underlining double standards presented.

Why on earth do you think I support the American government, right now? I don't. I'm ducking scared and frustrated here.

I feel like the whole world is increasingly going to crud, with Israel committing genocide, China committing genocide, Russia committing genocide. UK hurting freedom of speech and trans people. America's insane support of Israel, hurting trans people, deporting everyone.

And I'm frustrated with how it feels like terrible people like JK Rowling, Elon Musk, Trump administration, Netanyahu are constantly getting their way.

And frankly I'm sad that your impression of me is that I'm just railing against countries that aren't the West.

@BananaKing - I'm going to have to back up Pi here. on this site Pi is the only one other than me speaking out against Trump.  We don't speak out on everything but Trump commits a new crime almost daily and it's exhausting to keep up.

I think it's unfair to go all the way back to thinks like the genocide of native Americans for your whataboutism.  I don't know SA history but we all have a history.   let's stick to the crimes we have committed for guilt throwing.  Germany had Hitler and Nazis but today's Germany is better than most so I won't throw that in their face now.

and there is absolutely a ton of evil world wide.  I don't know how we got to the point where dictatorship became popular but leaders world wide are cracking down on free speech.

SA owning EA makes me uncomfortable.  as does Trump putting Tic Tok into conservative medias hands.  these become tools for censorship and propaganda.

SA owning EA likely won't be high on the list of evil deeds but I will not be surprised in LBGT representation is censored from there games.  and that would be a back step from a free and just world.

Thats absolutely not my impression of you. My opinion of you is filled with nothing but respect and admiration actually. Which is why I let myself get into this discussion with you.

I get that you're looking at the bad aspects of politics when it comes to this, and I'm not absolving any country of any wrong doing. But when ever that "concerned about human rights violation" comes up, it comes up in discussions about Asian and African countries.

World cup in Qatar?  Sports washing
America hosts it... Not one comment about sport washing
Saudi Arabia invests in gaming? Human rights violations comments
France hosts Olympics? Amazing.

It's a blatant double standard

Selfishly, I'm going to have more to say about games as opposed to sports. I doubt that I had ever commented on any World Cup or Olympics. I also haven't commented anywhere about the Saudi Arabia comedy festival.

I spend most of my time complaining about American wrong doings. Though I will say that I talk about American wrong doings more granularly.

Tbf I think many people aren't happy with the world cup taking place in America (basically just for money)

the-pi-guy

I am also unhappy about our American fascist government owning a 10% stake in Intel.

kitler53

let me just say this as an American...

the world cup is going to be in Qatar?  in America?   didn't know.

read above first:

sounds like a terrible way to make money.  Americans won't care.  and who from outside of America would visit a country so hostile to foreigners right now.   I'd highly suggest against it because you'd have a 10% chance of being detained by ICE.
