I highly recommend Strange New Worlds and Discovery for star trek. I never watched any of the older series so I can't comment on those, but the new ones felt like a good jumping in for me. I didn't mind the newer movies either.

personally i'll prefer next generation and deep space 9 to discovery and strange new worlds but if you haven't experience both i'd say they are quite different.

legacy star trek was very different than legacy star wars and kind of why the 2 franchises have a competition of sorts.

star wars always was a terrible story.   sorry if you disagree but you are wrong.   the most absurd thing about the modern star wars hating is people thinking the franchise was ever good.   as a franchise it's only on the map because of it's visual effects where were amazing by comparison back when star wars first released.

the reason legacy star trek ages so well is because the franchise was never about visual effects.   star trek is in space but it focuses on the science and politics of exploring the universe.   that also means it is much, much slower paced with a ton of dialog.


that changed with chris pine star trek movies.   i'm not saying they are bad movies (i actually quite like them) but they also sort of betray core star trek.  they are action movies with a ton of visual effects.   

discovery is of this new "chris pine" era.   much more action and visual effects.   i think it's part of why especially that first season of discovery is not well regarded.   it just doesn't feel like star trek at all.  

i think they did a pretty big course correction though with discovery season 2 carrying forward into strange new worlds.   they didn't stop doing action sequences but they made more time for the other stuff.   it's not a bad comprise of the core star trek identity from the expectation of a modern audience.

...actually i think the thing the modern series really lacks is due to season length.  discovery is like 13 episodes per season and next generation is 26.  something i liked about next generation was there were a bunch of episodes highly focused on a crew member.   you got to learn data's origin story for instance.    they kind of do that in discovery but only for like 3 of the crew members leaving a huge portion of the crew feeling like we don't know all that much about them.   i wish modern star trek had more of those character exposition episodes.

This past month I have been looking at more of my "white whales".... More rare and out of print anime.

I meant, like Season 4 is 9 episodes on 7 discs.

Whereas most of Season 1, 2 and 3, have 8 episodes on 4 discs.


It makes sense though:

I hate when episodes run longer than the standard for a series. Just make more episodes

i just want good tv.   i think with network tv the need to fit so strictly into the 30 or 60 minutes block leads to bad content sometimes.   either in the form of adding filler or cutting out stuff that likely needed to exist.

with streaming you don't have to fit into that so strictly which ought to mean each episode is exactly the right length to tell the story line.   no filler.  no cuts.    not sure that always happens but i do feel like stranger things does do it.   


i can (and many times do) stop an episode mid episode to go to bed or whatever.   i'm cool with that.  i made the choice to cut an episode off in the middle.   but an episode arbitrarily ending in the middle of a storyline just to tick the episode count up by +1.   fudge do i get pissed off when episodes end clearly unfinished with the rest to be in the next episode.  it's soo unnecessary for TV being streamed.
