Which first party dev will be Sonys top dog this gen?

For the past two gens Naughty Dog has been the most important and best selling first party dev for Sony.

On PS3 the uncharted series sold 21M units. With TLoU selling 7M in one year and close to 10M~ overall on PS3. Meaning ND sold roughly 30M copies of their games during that gen

On the PS4. TLoU:R continued the legs of the game and sold roughly 10M. UC4 was at 16 million last we heard. We don't have numbers for UC:LG or updated numbers for TLoU2, which the latter sold 4M in 3 days. From what we know ND sold over 30M , but realistically is between 40M-50M copies on the PS4.


But this gen the spot for top dog is up for grabs. Insomniac already is hitting the ground running with spiderman MM and ratchet and clank. With SM2 and wolverine on the way. GG have released Horizon FW, which will likely be huge like the first game. SSM is releasing GoW and have a new game by Cory in the works. And ND still haven't announced their multiplayer game.


While it will be impossible to know for sure who sold the most or brought in the most revenue. We probably will get an idea.

Sales wise? It'll be Insomniac. No doubt about that. They're making games way quicker than anyone else, and they're focusing on franchises that are hugely appealing to people who aren't even normally gamers.

Spiderman Miles Morales is the third biggest Sony title ever in the US. behind only Spiderman and GoW. This is dollar wise, not sales numbers, despite the fact the game launched at a lower price than the other two.  

Spiderman 2 and Wolverine are going to be massive, absolutely massive.  


The only way I see them being topped is, Sony finds a Fortnite level success with one of their GaaS, which seems incredibly unlikely.

Second place, I will say it depends on SMS's second game. I think there's a lot of potential there. GoW:R should be huge, and maybe the new IP will be too.

My thought

1- Insomniace. SP:MM, ratchet, Spiderman 2, wolverine are certain to release on PS5. I think Spiderman 3 and a new game by the ratchet team will also release. Each spiderman will do at least 25 million. Wolverine at least 10-15. Miles morales will easily hit 10M. And the ratchet games might do 5m combined. Basically it can be a staggering amount of profit and copies sold.

2- bungie: destiny will continue to generate a stream of profit for Sony. But their new game Matter should release this gen, and I think it will be big. Since it will also be multiplatform, i think it alongside destiny will generate a huge amount of cash for Sony

3: SSM: GoW:R will be huge. Just like GoW 2018 was. Then Cory will release his game, which I believe can be a big hit as well. Then we will probably get a new GoW game in 2026-2027. So I think SSM will just release more games on PS5 than ND

4- Naughty Dog: ND are getting slower with their output. They will release their multiplayer game, which could be a hit or miss. Rumors say a TLOU remake, then a new single player game. Either TLoU3 or a new IP. And I think that will be it for them this gen.

Yeah I agree. But we have to remember that Desiny is getting a cut on from the money Sony/insomniac is making. But we don't know the deal or details. Id personally assume it would be a percentage of the revenue. But still, they making games at a crazy rate and selling amazingly well.

If insomniac manage to release 2 full spiderman games and wolverine on PS5. Their tally of unit sales this gen could be close to 100 million if the games reach their sales potential

Like as depressing as it sounds, GOW2 could be Santa Monica's only game this gen. Guerilla will probably have 1 more, Naughty Dog could have just 1+factions, etc.

No way will GoW:R be Santa Monicas only PS5 game. Cory has a game in the works, and realistically he has been working on it since GoW released. Roughly 4 years now. A lot of that must be with setting up the gameplay, lore, pre production and such and not in full production true, but now that GoW is almost finished he probably has the majority of resources working on it. I dont think it will be long. 2-3 years max.

And the GoW team will likely release another game in 4-5 years. So it will be on PS5 as well.

Even with the cancellation of their new IP on PS4 SSM will still release 2  games on the system (GoW 2018 and ragnorak)
