you can take this however you want but what i'm taking from this is:

1. xbox has exited the console business

2. MS instead is investing in PC/windows being able to play xbox games

3. They will put an xbox sticker on any device capable of running windows and call it an xbox like they did with the ROG

Yeah xbox is dead.

Only real question I have is if they will still have a dedicated console sdk. Or if the next box they make will literally just run pc games, like the steam deck.

i dunno how you can have "multiple storefronts" and not just be a pc with windows dressing (pun intended).

i hear about them investing in getting legacy xbox games playable on pc.  so i assume the long term vision is to merge their xbox and window games storefronts together on windows.   MS moves peoples xbox purchases to this new PC store front and tells them they already own several xboxs so "we're cool guys".  MS has a few hardware partnerships to maintain the illusion of a console continuity.

From what i read it is just coat of paint on a quest with a gamepass free trial coupon.

Yeah, but xbox doesn't have any vr games. So it's odd, at least to me.

right.  but quest has "big picture mode" and what I read is meta added the ability to use Xbox cloud streaming a few years ago.  this collaboration is to highlight that I guess.

this is exactly why I don't trust MSs announcement a bit ago about Xbox committed to a next gen console.  slapping a sticker on a Rog or Quest is not an Xbox but they are marketing it as such.

if they have a "console" it's just going to be a green tinted PC.

No thanks.

Will be funny if microsoft fumbles things by thinking steam fans will migrate. If the next xbox box can launch steam, then I imagine most will just use steam.

i like the "publisher channel" bit.

i've always found it curiously odd how little effort all of the platform owners put into their store fronts considering that's where the money comes in from.  there are lots of things they could all improve on like stop listing the games i already own in the list of games on sale.

...but the publisher channel thing is one of the more glaring omissions.  i love devolver games and i've often times wondered if they had any games release that i missed.   you'd think sony and all of the publisher would want me to be able to answer that while in the store.   at a bare minimum list out all of the game tiles for the publisher.   but if allowed to i'd bet the bigger publisher would take the effort glam up their page with ads for upcoming games.  seems like a low cost/high reward marketing budget spend to me.

reads era thread.

reads MS's statement:

With the aggregated gaming library, players can conveniently launch games from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net and other leading PC storefronts from a single library within the Xbox PC app. Whether you're on a Windows PC or a handheld device, your Xbox library, hundreds of Game Pass titles, and all your installed games from leading PC storefronts will now be at your fingertips.

i feel like there is a reading comprehension error on era.   half of them are talking like they think this totally combines all libraries together in all capacities instead of just starting the game previously installed...

Yeah unless steam and the others partner with microsoft, it's just launching the apps lol.

@pubs steam has that feature.
