Reddit bans subreddits for darknet and selling/trading drugs, beer, and guns | ResetEra

QuoteReddit banned some of its most popular subreddits after adding a policy that prevents users from soliciting or facilitating the sale or gifting of "prohibited goods." The company announced the rule on its r/announcements page on Wednesday. While the social network is best known for discussions on controversial topics, memes, and online protests, it has also become a destination for those looking to purchase or win goods from other members and communities. Starting today, users will no longer be allowed to use Reddit as the middleman for obtaining prohibited items.Click to expand...

YouTube bans videos that show how to assemble guns, videos promoting sites selling guns/accessories | ResetEra

Quote(Bloomberg) YouTube Bans Firearms Demo Videos, Entering the Gun Control Debate
QuoteYouTube, a popular media site for firearms enthusiasts, this week quietly introduced tighter restrictions on videos involving weapons, becoming the latest battleground in the U.S. gun-control debate.YouTube will ban videos that promote or link to websites selling firearms and accessories, including bump stocks, which allow a semi-automatic rifle to fire faster. Additionally, YouTube said it will prohibit videos with instructions on how to assemble firearms. The video site, owned by Alphabet Inc.'s Google, has faced intense criticism for hosting videos about guns, bombs and other deadly weapons. For many gun-rights supporters, YouTube has been a haven. A current search on the site for "how to build a gun" yields 25 million results, though that includes items such as toys. At least one producer of gun videos saw its page suspended on Tuesday. Another channel opted to move its videos to an adult-content site, saying that will offer more freedom than YouTube.Click to expand...
More at the link. This will hit a lot of big gun YouTubers hard since many of them are sponsored by online gun/accessory stores.*Edit - It's worth pointing out that they're not banning literally all videos and/or channels featuring guns. Just the ones that promote gun stores and show people how to assemble firearms. I assume you can still upload things like gun reviews or target practicing and stuff like that. I just went with the title of the Bloomberg article :P

Probably good idea with reddit. You shouldn't openly let your platform be used for illegal activities. That said, it's reddit and they hardly ever do anything right nowadays.

Youtube is more interesting since as far as I know this is the first time they're restricting uploads outside the standard stuff. Biggest problem is that they continue to upset content creators and are really pushing their luck. If another company does a big push into the online video market, youtube could lose a lot of users.
