These together made Phil kill Lionhead.

They paid $2.5bn for it. They obviously expected miracles

They will get more than that though. Eventually

The thing with Minecraft is that a vast majority of its success happened before Mojang was bought by Microsoft. It was already on nearly every platform and had already sold an absurd number of copies. Microsoft likely expected its meteoric rise to continue as it was and made bad projections. The question now is, will Minecraft be a singular phenomenon that dies off over the next couple years or will it thrive as a franchise for decades?

the-pi-guy

The Minecraft and Windows are likely because of stupidly high expectations rather than any sort of failure.

As for Halo and Xbox. That's definitely not doing as well as expected.
What was it?  1.2m in 2 months in the biggest market at the best selling time of the year;for a franchise that basically expects to sell 7-8m, that's awful.  Wouldn't be surprised if it sold like a third of what was expected overall, and same for the Xbox.

Businesses don't care about eventually. It's all about making short term profits.

Kotaku: 98% of PC Copies of Rise of the Tomb Raider Were Bought on Steam - NeoGAF

Quote/ From the new article on the closure of Lionhead there was this little tidbit.
Quote"When we started the project we weren't aware of Windows 10," says a source. "We were going to ship on Xbox One initially and then we wanted to come out on PC at a later point, most likely though Steam. But we got burnt quite badly." "Without Steam, without other platforms, it was just painful," says another. "The Windows Store is a giant disaster. It's on fire. 98% of PC copies of Rise of the Tomb Raider, a flagship Windows 10 game, were bought on Steam. The same is true for Minecraft. That hurt us, too. The store's a mess; the number of people who couldn't even install the game from the Microsoft store was... significant."

Windows 10 installs also lagging behind Microsoft's expectations.
QuoteWindows 10 installs, too, were nowhere near what Microsoft had planned..."There are supposed to be 2x as many Xboxes out there as there are right now. There are supposed to be 2x as many Windows 10 installs as there currently are.

Going off current steamspy numbers that would put the Windows Store version around ~15000 copies sold.

Crazy

I don't see it dying off. It's selling 50k+ per day even now

In its current incarnation, yes. It's crazy. But the man behind the game didn't come with the purchase. I wonder how a sequel will do or how much longer the current version will sustain its sales.

I mean, it could be immortal. It's like LEGO (the toy). It doesn't rely on technology or anything that time damages

the-pi-guy

Those are stupid high expectations.

40m Xbox Ones?  When were these predictions made?
