Fished out some numbers. N.Sane trilogy was ~130k

Crash 4 26k
SW Squadrons 25k

Physical only of course but I think that's bad for Crash 4. Recent physical launches for comparison:

Avengers 56k
Mario 3D 85k
TLOU2 194k
Ghost of Tsushima 75k

72% of US next-gen pre-order customers chose PS5 | GamesIndustry.biz

Small survey of 511 gamers about next gen. 79 people managed to pre-order, with total orders of:

57 PS5
 24 XSX
 8 PS5d
 6 XSS

For a total split in orders of 68/32 in favour of PS5. Very small sample of pre-orders but suggests supply is about 2:1 which is what we've seen so far in other places.

More interesting is the roughly 148 people who wanted to pre-order but couldn't yet. The total demand out of these 148 people was:

86 PS5
59 XSX
31 PS5d
16 XSS

So counting about 227 people who want/ got a next gen console we have a demand ratio of PS5/XSX/PS5d/XSS of 50/29/14/8 or total demand of 63/37 in favour of PS5 from this sample.

Small sample sizes. But I wonder how Europe looks

Not that small, confidence interval of demand would be 6% at the 95% confidence level. i.e. this survey says we're 95% sure pre-order demand across the gaming population of US is a ratio between 57-69% for PS5 and 31-43% for Xbox Series.

Yes but if it's 57%to 43% that's only 1.3:1. We can't really say it's 2:1 based on this.

BTW, where did you get the confidence interval? Did you see the original survey?

where does the headline get 72 from.  I see 68 and 63 but not 72.

good news for sony.  I would have thought xbox would do better in America as it is their best terrirorry.

Nope you can't say that, that's why I haven't ;D

Standard confidence interval can be calculated just from sample size, their estimated error would be different knowing their methodology.

Its a bad headline. Survey basically suggests PS5 is doing better in pre-orders demand than the current install base ratio would suggest.

QuoteAmong them, 15% said they managed to successfully pre-order a next generation console. Within this group, 72% went for the disc edition of the PS5, 30% went for the Xbox Series X, 10% for the PS5 digital edition and 8% for the Xbox Series S.

*with gamers.

having pre-order demand of 227 of 511 tells you all you need to know in that this is only for 1 demographic.

Well out of people who have at least tried to pre-order there's a bigger demand for PS5 vs Xbox than the install base of PS4 vs XB1. It could be that PS is growing and winning people over, it could be PS owners are more excited for next gen and want to move quicker. It could be anything really.

Crash 4 did better physically than digitally in the UK. So total first week sales with digital included were less than 50k and down at least 60% on the N.Sane trilogy's physical only debut.

not saying this is the reason but...

..i've personally have been wary of buying any game that hasn't explicitly stated that the current gen release has a free next gen update.   it's the leading reason i have not bought TLoU2 or GoT.   It's the reason i'm annoyed i bought spiderman in the early parts of this year now that i know the next gen version is sold separately.

If you weren't going to play those games already then fair enough, when you eventually will play them you'd want the best version available.

I don't understand holding off on a game you really want to play for next gen though. I played these games and moved on, I'm probably not touching them on next gen anyway and if I really did want to play them again then BC is fine. A free upgrade is meaningless for me.

i have a massive backlog of games.  kind of a product of me having more money than time.  i rarely buy a game for more than $20 but once a game hits about $10 i just can't help myself from buying literally any game that has reviewed well so i always have vastly more games than i can hope to play.  all of last gen i only purchases 3 games at >  $20 and those were my pre-orders of GoW and Uncharted 4 and a $40 sale price on divinity original sin 2.

there was never any rush for me to buy TLoU2 or GoT even though i fully expect to play them.  ..but i was kind of annoyed when I bought TLoU and then rebought TLoU when it was remastered for ps4.

i really don't care if they charge more for next gen.  i just really don't like not knowing if i'll have to pay more for next gen.  far worse than a next-gen premium is "double dipping" because they didn't communicate that next-gen required a separate purchase.

For TLoU2 and GoT,.. i was always going to play them on ps5.  they launched much to close to ps5's release for me to have any hope of playing them before ps5 launches since i'm always at least a year late playing a game.

Well there you go, that's what I mean. You add games to your backlog and buy them on sale, which is the kind of person I'd expect to be waiting for next gen.

People who buy on first week aren't that kind of buyer, they buy games anyway. So I think waiting for next gen is a miniscule factor in the low sales for crash 4 here.
