Oh I was waiting all day to be able to play my GoW Ragnarok copy for the first time finally but I apparently need to download the whole game despite having a disc? >:(
Hasn't that been a thing since PS4?

I don't know, I really only play downloaded games anyway  ;D
Minor annoyance but I would've started earlier if I had known hehe

Yeah, vast majority of my games are downloads. It's the superior way to it.

No the disc is copied to the system but no download is needed.

Way off topic, but I got reminded of a thought I've had for a while.  Should Sony go with SD cards like NIntendo for games?  More specifically, custom carts that load as fast, as their SS solution.  Like, I'm obviously in the physical camp, but they've become nothing but installers.  Now what if the cart gets run and all updates are installed to the game cart instead of the HD?  Obviously you wouldn't cut the hard drive out.

Wouldn't that be super expensive compared to a disc? Don't see what it'd solve.

yes.

with some games coming in over 100  Gb retail cost of a cart is like $80.  I'm sure that's not what Sony would pay but a disc is like 2 cents to make.

as far as solving,..  the disc wouldn't need to be installed so physical people would save like 20 minutes on the day 1 play.

Sorry, let me elaborate.  BD Media is a dead end and is legacy to movies at this point, much like CD is for music.  So moving forward do we cut physical media period?  Which I'd loath and probably never buy a console again.  Or do we move on to new technologies?  Or rather, old technology (Tech is pretty dang cyclical).  I mention SD cards since that's the current external memory format still in use.  Is cost an issue?  Yeah, I've seen some stupid things done with the Switch because of it.  But, what if Sony whips something up with 256 gigs of storage and can access as fast as the PS5s SSD solution?  Something that Sony may be able to get prices down, or even just modify SD card reads and use standard SD cards.

I think discs are still going to be the way to go for decades. If R&D budgets disappear and capacity stops improving, they can still print games on multiple discs for so much cheaper.

They could treat SD cards like external harddrives and maybe make something work, but it just doesn't seem worth the cost to implement.

have you seen the digital rates on nintendo/xbox/playstation?   it's like 80% of the market already and creeping up every year.

the answer to your question is clearly yes.    PC is already 100% digital.   like it or not you are either going digital or quitting video games entirely.

what you are pretty much pitching is that games ship on a removable SSD.  Go check out the price for the removable SSD for xbox and tell me if you are willing to play a $20-$50 premium (per game) for physical media.    a cart will NEVER be even close to as cheap to produce as a disc.   it's a manufacturing thing.   clean rooms and silicon lithography will never be as cheap as injection modeling and aluminum.

I'm going to make a few predictions:

1.) There will be a State of Play this week or next.

2.) The State of Play will be better received than the Showcase. Mostly on the basis that the Showcase was so poor. I think a couple of single player updates would be enough for people to be happy. New trailers for Death Stranding 2 and Rise of the Ronin. Nothing crazy or unexpected, and I think people would be happier.

Bonus prediction, I feel like chances are good that 2023 will end up being an especially poor year in retrospect. I feel like I might end up being wrong about this one. But I think even 2024 will end up feeling like a much stronger year than this one.

Jokes on you, it's almost 2 years since Horizon 2 came out.

They'll announce the complete edition for PS5, and then it'll come out on PC 5 months from now.
