The importer might have to cut some aswell and then the rest will be passed along to us. Providing that product still sells at the higher price.

Im finding that im against everything trump is doing. But the Democrats where fine with higher payroll taxes, but if you tax our goods higher there going to riot? On a tax you can control by not buying that product?

The main problem people have is that this is going to massively hurt the relationship with one of the US's most important trade partners, who just happens to share a huge border with the US as well, it can in and of itself lead to serious problems if the relationship between both countries is bad, while also harming the US economy. All for a fudgy pointless wall, that over half the country didn't even want to begin with.

I'd be furious if I had to stop buying a product I like just to avoid funding a government project as absurdly retarded as this one.

On another note, here's another good one from the Trump camp:

payroll taxes are progressive.  very wealthy people pay more and the very poor pay nothing.

usage tax (which is what this tax is) are the reverse of progressive.  for the poor the price increase is a massive percentage of their income.  for the very wealthy they pay next to nothing.

people cannot stop eating.  produce is a huge export for mexico and your grocery bill will be affected by this.

Quote from: Legend on Jan 26, 2017, 11:00 PMMexico's exports to the US are huge for Mexico but much smaller for us. They'd do much more damage to their own economy than to the US.
doubtful.

do you really think americans will be willing to consume less when we lose our souces of cheap products.  we are fudgy over our relationship with china too you know.  without mexican and chinese imports we are probably looking at 100% inflation.

oh yeah,.. trump wants to weaken the value of our dollar too.  200% inflation.   great plan for a country that has almost every business doing labor heavy activities in cheap labor markets and then importing.

GE - bankrupt
Ford - bankrupt
Apple - bankrupt

i understand wanting to make policy the change thing but trump is going to lurch our economy with is always always bad for business.

US reverses travel ban over court ruling as Trump fumes - BBC News
Trump and some of the people who support him, and even some people who are against him, need to understand that the President does not have supreme authority in the United States. Even executive orders are not immune to being struck down. An executive order found unconstitutional by the courts can be dismissed. Republican opposition to Trump is already piling up. An increasing number of them don't support his ideas, especially the wall with Mexico. They are also turning against his cabinet picks. This is probably going to be an uneventful presidency insofar as things Trump wants actually happening. The Democrats are entirely against him and many Republicans can't stand him and don't agree with some of his more striking ideas. There is no event currently happening as there was during the Bush presidency that is uniting the parties. If he doesn't try to play ball with Congress and the courts and attempts to force everything, he's going to find out just how little power the President has in government compared to the owner of a company.

Personally, I felt that Trump's travel ban was poorly executed. When it comes to prohibiting migrants from entering the US, that is lawful according to Section 1182(f):

QuoteWhenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.
However, his ban also applied to people with visas and green cards, which violates Section 1152(a) of Title 8, U.S. Code making it unlawful:

QuoteNo person shall receive any preference or priority or be discriminated against in the issuance of an immigrant visa because of the person's race, naughtiness, nationality, place of birth, or place of residence

As I pointed out in another thread, another issue that arises from this travel ban is that many of the terrorist attacks in the US over the last two decades have been carried out by people who are either from or have heritage from nations that aren't even on the travel ban. Banning people from Somalia because of rampant pirate activity in their region but neglecting Saudi Arabia, which was the nation of origin for 15 of the 19 people directly involved in the 9/11 attacks, raises a lot of questions.
