I thought this was common knowledge? This is one of the only details about the app that we know for certain

That doesn't make sense at all. So you subscribe to play online through switch service and somehow app store on your phone knows?

Maybe it is, but when people talk about the subscription, which is common knowledge, they don't ever mention needing to buy an independent app to take full advantage of the features... Which is a lot more concerning to me and common knowledge

The app would be free to install but need the subscription to get past the login page.

If the app also cost money, it would be mentioned here:

Again, doesn't make sense. Why would it say it there and why would they specify the limited app is free? It implies the full version costs money.

"Voice chat app" is included under the perqs of having the subscription. If it also needed an additional one time fee/purchase, there'd be an asterisks next to it with that information.

Nintendo specifies the limited app is free because they're specifying it doesn't need a paid subscription, not that downloading the app itself is free.

Let's hope the thing dies after launch.  But then again, Xbox One's preorders were terrible and this thing is sold out.  So who knows.  Sounds like Nintendo knows exactly what they're doing or rather Nintendo knows they'll get a pass.

being sold out means nothing when it comes to Nintendo. this is the company that is notorious for creating artificial demand. the nintendo hardcore will buy this at launch. just like they did the WiiU. but after that, lets see what happens. starting May we will see what type of effect this has on the industry, and we will see how demand really is.
