I think it was a project that only got a couple months in before it was cancelled and the studio was closed, which was especially surprising since they made a big deal about letting the fans decide which project they wanted the team to work on.

Press Play was a Microsoft first party studio. They were working on this:

When Microsoft shut them down.

Nintendo: We don't release a lot of games
Sony: And it's been delayed.
Microsoft: Cancelled!  I mean, what game were we talking about?

Oh wow if Crackdown 3 is cancelled too, that means every big game announced at MS E3 2014 didn't release. That show had so many issues thanks to leaks and XBO failing.

Game dev is a hard biz, really takes a toll on people's minds and bodies.
Just look at this poor soul.

QuoteIt's a big blow to the Xbox line up. Honestly there's a serious lack of single player story driven games. Well, exclusive ones at least. Everything is literally MP focused. Forza 7, State of Decay, Sea of Thieves, Crackdown...(and I've heard Crackdown isn't going too hot either, though nothing as bad as this).
Unless they have a bunch of first party studios secretly tucked away somewhere (which they don't that I know of), I genuinely struggle to think of what surprises they could have at E3 *as of right now*. Halo 6 is to be expected, and I don't see publishers playing ball much anymore with 3rd party exclusives unless Microsoft gives the Xbox division a huge budget to throw cash around, which I highly doubt. Their major first party IP are on a decline with Halo doing less than before and Gears 4 not selling that well at all relatively speaking (not good enough to sustain a huge studio with that many workers and budget).
What's happening now is the exact opposite of what Xbox fans seemed to want out of a Phil spencer leadership.
I remember when he became head of Xbox and everyone was saying how there'll be tons of new games, but they're still coasting on announcements from 2013-2014 and in that time, games have been cancelled, multiple studios closed including Lionhead...
As a big Xbox fan since day one, I'm not very hopeful for the future. Scorpio won't do anything without software to push it heavily.

thats just brutal. seriously i been complaining about delays from Sony, but looking forward holly hell is the situation different.

i do wonder what MS will be doing going forward. their second party efforts have been failures for the most part this gen (well commercially at least). and skipping out on PS4 would be insane, so third party multiplates are going to become more and more rare, and as we seen these past 2 years, they are timed at best. MS also seems to have major issues when it comes to managing the games they are publishing.

if Sea of Thieves flops, and crackdown is cancelled as well, MS will seriously be in trouble.

also the gears part is interesting as well. they need the next game to perform better.

It's expected.
They basically went from having the most game studios at the start of this gen, and after quietly cleaning up, they have 9 game studios.  And none of them are very productive.

The US part of SIE basically has more game development power than the entirety of Microsoft Studios.

Ludicrous Speed

And nothing of value was lost. Game looked like shame even for a Japanese game every time they showed it.
