yep.   i remember building a PC once.   it was both much easier and much harder that i thought it would be.    at my age (and wage) i don't think i could be bothered to do it again.

Does the case matter that much since it's just a server?

It doesn't have to be that specific case, but I'd like a good one that can hold 12+ drives.

I'm still waiting on another HDD anyways, so I'm not in a rush.

Going to try putting together a RAID6 with 4 18TB drives. So 36 TB of usable space. Currently using 30TB on my current PC.

I'd probably be totally fine with like 6 drives for a very long time.

But I feel like it would be nice to set up those 1TB drives, and have them in their own RAID configuration.

Maybe I should just get this 8x case that is available and swap out the disc drives slots for 3.5" slots.

I reinstalled windows on a new 2TB SSD.
That was kind of painful.

I luckily have never had to do that. I only ever upgrade external hard drives.

Newegg has a big flag that says "Replenishment units available in mid-May"

So hopefully this week.

I got 9.49. I assume my mouse sensitivity is a lot lower than most gamers.

Well like two months later I have my stuff up and running.

The hardware is great, I'm very happy with that. I was able to get 15 HDDs on a single computer all hooked up, and everything seems to be running smoothly.

Struggling a lot more on the software wise.
It still picked up the Windows installation that I pulled off the SSD, when I upgraded. But I was thinking that Linux might be a better option.

I tried OpenMediaVault, but that is a "headless" OS. Which I'm not a huge fan of.

Tried Ubuntu, and customized a bunch of things. I have a RAID6 set up. I think I will stick with Ubuntu. But it's kind of weird.
Windows you can generally see all the attached drives and files in File Explorer, whereas in Ubuntu those things are separate. And the attached drives, and the files on them are somewhat hidden, whereas on Windows you can just find them on the PC menu.

I'm pretty sure Windows has easy GUIs for everything that I spent like an hour trying to find info on.

It's also very frustrating when you ask if there's a GUI for something, and you get responses of "of course not, it's faster and easier to just type in the cmd."
Ah yes, it's so much easier to spend an hour reading documentation and typing stuff in as opposed to spending 5 minutes reading a GUI.

I filled up 36 TB.

Moved an 18 TB drive from my old PC and winding down my old Plex server in favor of the new.

But, apparently it takes multiple days to rebuild the RAID.
I can still access data during that time, but I can't add data until the process is done.

Only 88 hours this year in steam

But Animal Well, Invincible, and Manifold Garden. This was another great year for indie games.

the-pi-guy

A lot more Steam usage than me this year.

I guess this is a pc general thread and not a pc gaming thread...

Do any of yall have files you sync between multiple computers? I tried onedrive but nuked it almost immediately because it sucked. Now I'm trying syncthing but since it doesn't use the cloud, I might need to get creative.

the-pi-guy

Nope, sorry.

I'd probably make a NAS.
