I'd just use google docs or openoffice. 
Both are free.

What flipping form of office are you using!?

It's just around $100.

There's a couple different set ups of Office. 
Office Professional is 400$.
Home and Student is like 115$.

Is till trying to make the Zelda map, his templates are saved in word format, will those programs convert from word document?

I'd use google docs, you can upload in word format and then download in word format. 
Open office is great too, but sometimes in .doc or .docx, stuff gets messed up.
