The first thing to know about the new Nintendo Switch home gaming system: it's really fun to play. With great graphics, loads of game titles and incredible performance, the Nintendo Switch will provide people with many hours of engaging and interactive gaming entertainment.

But creating a device so fun required some serious engineering. The development encompassed 500 man-years of effort across every facet of creating a new gaming platform: algorithms, computer architecture, system design, system software, APIs, game engines and peripherals. They all had to be rethought and redesigned for Nintendo to deliver the best experience for gamers, whether they're in the living room or on the move.

A Console Architecture for the Living Room and Beyond

Nintendo Switch is powered by the performance of the custom Tegra processor. The high-efficiency scalable processor includes an NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world's top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards.

The Nintendo Switch's gaming experience is also supported by fully custom software, including a revamped physics engine, new libraries, advanced game tools and libraries. NVIDIA additionally created new gaming APIs to fully harness this performance. The newest API, NVN, was built specifically to bring lightweight, fast gaming to the masses.

Gameplay is further enhanced by hardware-accelerated video playback and custom software for audio effects and rendering.
We've optimized the full suite of hardware and software for gaming and mobile use cases. This includes custom operating system integration with the GPU to increase both performance and efficiency.

NVIDIA gaming technology is integrated into all aspects of the new Nintendo Switch home gaming system, which promises to deliver a great experience to gamers.

The Nintendo Switch will be available in March 2017. More information is available at https://www.nintendo.com/switch.

Nintendo Switch is a trademark of Nintendo.

i want to know the floor.  how much processing power does just the portable have...

...that floor (imo) will be a massive problem for any AAA console game appearing on xbox one or ps4 especially in a post ps4 pro/scorpio world.

and skyrim was on ps3.  it's a late port and it was developed for consoles that are pretty low in power.

do you think RDR2 is coming to ps3?  and by extension do you think RDR2 is coming to switch?

...dear god.  that is a terrible sentence.  am i going to have to write out nintendo switch for the whole next generation to not have to write stupid sentences??

Skyrim vanilla  is a terrible looking game.  If that gets ported to the "switch" then poor Nintendo fans and oh well.  If the remaster that's being targeting for the Xbox One and PS4 get released on the "switch" then good for Nintendo.

but there are 2 switches,... home and portable.  look at zelda in the video,.. when he went portable the visuals had a pretty massive downgrade.  it could be remaster on home switch and vanilla on portable switch but the fact a vanilla version exists is important here.

there is high and low performance here.  it's kind of like vita and ps4,.. a lot of ps4 games just get down ported to vita quite easily will some graphics reductions.  now that's all well and good for smaller titles but the big games that really leverage ps4 don't get ported.  on nintendo switch the lower performance port is compulsory.  that means games that can or refuse to support the low performance mode will just skip NX.

it's the game cube mini disk or the n64 cartrige or the wii being 2x gamecubes duct taped together or the wiiU second screen requirement all over again.  nintendo make it hard to have 3rd party games work both on the current nintendo system as well as the competitors.  nintendo fan will curse out 3rd parties for being biases or lazy but 3rd parties will see the platform as a lot of extra work to get their games running there.

i'll bet any (vizioneck) dollar amount you want.  NX will get a few late ports and launch and then basically not have any support,.. at least from western developers.

I believe Tegra Pascal can reach XB1 power level in dock mode and half of that in portable mode.

Supposed specs

nx specs - Pastebin.com

Anyone that's more technical minded here to tell me what this means? Lol

Or just say NS.
Interestingly enough, all 3 consoles this gen are going for that high spec/low spec approach.
PS4/PS4 Pro
XBO/Scorpio
NS portable/NS console

Hopefully that'll push a lot of games to be extra scalable.  Optimistically that's what would happen.  We'll have to wait to see how things play out.

The device is the same though.  I guess there'll be a downclock when you take it out of the dock, but that's just changing settings fro "high" to "medium" or whatever.

Though I'm not disagreeing about third party support.  It's going to be gone by next holiday season.  Unless by some fluke this thing sells Wii levels.

Well nintendo is low low spec/super low spec.

All signs point to this being noticeably below XBO.

Probably true.

Heck the Wii U had struggles with price+power due to just including a screen. NS includes the screen AND has to fit everything in a tablet. It'll either cost a lot or have very poor performance.

not really drawn to scale but...

--ps3
--NS portable---------------------------------------------NS console
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------xbox-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------scorpio
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ps4----------------------------------------------------------------------ps4 pro

  | ---------------------------- this here is a massive gap ------------------------ |

I'm quite aware of the gap.
That's why I said optimistically we'll have games that scale really well.  Probably won't happen very often... as usual.

The portable screen is only 720p, so that alone is going to free up a lot of power. It may not actually be that bad.
