The franchise ran its course with many people years ago. By the time Gears 3 came out, a lot of fans, myself included, wanted it to end. Not that we didn't like it anymore, but it just felt like it was time to move on. Multiplayer experiences have evolved since the peak of Gears and even my buddy, who was practically a Gears multiplayer junkie, says he can't go back anymore.

If Gears was going to come back, it needed to do so in a way that it still felt like Gears but also fresh. It needed to not play exactly the way it has. It needed to do what Santa Monica just did with God of War. A new gameplay take for an older franchise. Instead, Gears 4 is rehashing what the series has always been. It also doesn't help that the characters people became attached to are not front and center. So there is over-familiarity with the gameplay but no emotional familiarity with the characters. At least as far as we've seen.

Gears also isn't a very narrative heavy game. It's really just a series of cover shooting set pieces. You clear one to make it to the next without terribly compelling plot points in between. It was the quintessential "dudebro" series. Macho characters doing and saying macho things with big loud guns against big loud enemies. That kind of game has its place still but it's not where it used to be. Gears 4 will probably sell well based on its name and some thirsty Xbox owners, but unless it turns out to be amazing I don't see it being received like its predecessors.

I was talking to my friend who's a converted xbox 360 gamer this gen about gears. He said he loves them and he'd keep an eye on gears 4 for pc but he's almost certain he'll be disappointed. Apparently at the end of the third game pretty much everything except humans dies so having a fourth game doesn't fit in and is weird. Also he heard that a totally new studio is making it and expects another halo 4 type situation.

He's not really what I'd call a hardcore gamer so I think his views will be similar to a lot of the gears fanbase. I can't see this game doing very well.

The only people that might buy it are fans of the series that haven't been turned off. As you said, this is doing nothing new so I don't think it will attract many new people at all.

well to be honest, from what i seen so far from the game it looks pretty bland. it just doesnt seem that Microsoft Vancouver black tusk the coalition has the talent or experience to do a great game. but the lack of interest, even from gaming journalism seems a bit surprising for such a high profile IP. i was expecting a lot more interest and talk about the game, and such a fall from grace seem surprising. if preorders are following the same trend as the lack of interest, then i bet MS are shitting their pants now.

they ran out of money.

you can just so clearly see by that drop at the eighth position what ms was pushing as ads.  sony has a far longer tail with GoW and spiderman the clear victors of announcement.  good for insomniac on that,.. they really need another hit.

It's crazy how many views GOW got. Almost has 200k likes too.

It's not being played as an add yet it's one of the most viewed videos on the PlayStation channel.

Zelda is in a similar situation with 140k likes. It's the most viewed video on Nintendo's channel.

XBOX is just throwing money at the fan and advertising hardware. XBOX One S is their second most viewed video yet only has 62k likes. Halo Wars 2 is their top viewed game video from E3 yet only has 26k likes. Basically everything is just being hyper inflated with ad views.

Forza Horizon 3 seems to be their best naturally performing game with >3 million views and 45k likes with both videos combined.

And GeOW is dead. Less than a 700k views and 7k likes both videos combined. It's trailer from a few months ago has 15 million views but that was almost all ads. Only has 65k likes. Might sell great, but this franchise isn't hot on yt.

God of War is even crazier if you look at how many more views it's gotten on other channels as well. The reveal has gotten over 3.4 million clicks on another channel, then there's another one where it has over a million, another 5 where it has over 500k and the list goes on. I saw a thread on the chertz yesterday where someone counted that the God of War reveal already has over 20 million views on Yourube.

ReCore's views have been abysmal after the ad views stopped coming. Add onto the facts that Inafune is more of a businessman than a producer and Comcept & Armature do not have good track records, it's not looking good...

Recore looks like it will be nothing worth noting anyway, in yesterdays PS I love You podcast Colin and Greg said that from what they've seen the game will be lucky to be a 7 when it's out. Maybe things will turn out differently, but at the moment Recore looks like nothing more than a bulletpoint on a fanboy exclusive list and not like something really worth paying attention to.

That sucks to hear.

I was expecting the game to be received as mediocre but the E3 trailer kinda got me hyped. Hopefully levels they didn't see are better.

DerNebel

Looks like they gave Recore another push.

Horizon

I am not sure how related it is but I thought it was interesting that Horizon's Aloy Journey trailer now has over 7 million views which puts it in the upper echelons of video's on playstations channel. This game is going to do so well.
