Microsoft had poisoned Nokia before they bought them (Lack of Android killed them if you ask me.).  This is a bit different.  There was no exclusive contract with MS before hand and this fits in with Microsoft's attack on businesses.

it's also a fudge ton of money to buy a user base (not a technology,.. they are buying the attention of the people that use the platform).  maybe things are different world wide but from where i'm sitting linkin isnt' a cool as it used to me.  much like monster.com it seems past its prime.

I don't think they're buying the user attention, but their personal details. Linkedin database has so much proffesional data on people.

What's more useful though?  You say Monster's past its prime, but the best way to apply to non retail/manufacturing jobs is online.  There's more than mosnter, but the idea of Monster remains.  Unless you know of something better?  Wait, something like Linked in?  This is a pure business transaction for Microsoft.  More or less to lock businesses into Microsoft.  Since that's where Microsoft makes its money.
