I don't know how that would have affected overall sales. One of the big selling points of PS3 was free online functionality. I can pretty much guarantee fewer PS3s would have sold without that bonus compared to 360.

Agreed.

Charging for online works when you're people's primary console. However when you're a system people pick up just for exclusives, paid online is a big deterrent. Nobody wants to pay for a feature they hardly ever use.

I bet if XBO had free online its sales this gen would be moderately better.

It shows they have a lot of confidence in PS4. They obviously think Neo will do very well.
