NeoGAF - View Single Post -  PlayStation Network getting two-factor authentication, Sony confirms

Quote
QuoteSony is making a long-awaited effort to shore up security on the PlayStation Network — the company is planning to add two-factor authentication to the service, Sony confirmed to Polygon today.
"In order to further safeguard our users and their accounts, we are preparing to offer a 2-step verification feature," a Sony representative said.
The spokesperson did not offer a time frame at this point, saying only that "more details will be shared at a later date." Sony updated the PS3's firmware to version 4.80 yesterday, and users noticed that if they entered incorrect login information, the system mentioned two-step verification — which isn't currently available on PlayStation Network accounts. Those accounts are used on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, the web, the PlayStation mobile app and the PlayStation Portable.

Why? 2 step is optional it seems.

Not when I try to log in and be greeted with a "Is your cell phone with you?  Well you better go get it or else your PS3/4 is unusable."  I'm a lazy man @Legend!

No I think it's optional in the sense you can disable it under profile settings.

I agree 2 step is annoying.

I haven't' logged in yet, so I'm not sure, but think they made it automatic for the first time?

I hate the cell phone things.
My cell phone is not a permanant thing...  so I really don't want to add my cell phone here.

It seems its just a message right now. Like its too early for it to be there.

from what i read this is a "defect" that only happens if you type in the wrong password when logging into psn on ps3.  read what the message says, "the sign-in ID or passoword are incorrect.  If you have 2-step verification active you must enter a device..."  it's just a message that alludes to a feature that doesn't exist,.. someone checked-in code they weren't supposed to.

The story is that a buggy message "leaked" the fact sony is working on 2-step verification.   ..but sony's official statement simply confirms it is being worked on and then states they have no details to share on when it will release.  also,.. the message does nothing to suggest it is opt-in or opt-out but it does confirm it is optional.
