I think it's safe to assume ps4k is the real deal. Looks to launch this october. Just guessing based on the fact the ps4 games will be required to have a ps4k mode from October forward. So what your guess for the first month's sales of ps4k?

500k in November.

I don't think that many people own 4K tvs yet.

Well they only make so many, most people will probably buy the PS4 anyway.

From what I understand, you don't need a 4K TV to get most of the benefits.

What are the benefits though?

Improved framerate and added graphical features. Not purely a resolution bump.

But any resolution bump is going to detract from the ability to upgrade other parts of the game. Framerate and graphical features would only be improved slightly unless games have separate 4K modes and 1080p modes. The leaked specs don't show a device capable of doing both at the same time.

...with a GPU twice as powerful, an improved CPU, and higher memory bandwidth? Yeah. No way is that being purely aimed at an attempt to run games in 4K. Which it will probably fall well short of doing natively and I'm even doubting up scaling for most games.

Upscaling 1080p to 4k is trivial. I have no idea how it's become a talking point with these rumors since existing 4K tvs already do a great job at it.

What with the leaked specs make you think it's aimed at something besides higher resolution? Most PS4 games are CPU bottlenecked yet the CPU is getting the smallest upgrade.

Read what Tacos posted in the PS4K rumor thread on page 13 and look at what it says for those using 1080p screens.

Expect to see better performance for new - and patched - PlayStation 4 titles. Based on what we've seen of Final Fantasy 15, some games could really benefit. We just hope it doesn't open to the door to unoptimised code for older PS4 hardware.
Well, according to Sony's own documents, there is a focus on delivering 4K gaming content, though upscaling to UHD resolution is likely. Owners of 1080p screens can expect benefits too, explicitly stated as:

Higher frame-rates
More stable frame-rates
Improved graphics fidelity
Additional graphics features
