Microsoft announces Xbox Live cross-network (PSN and other networks) play - NeoGAF

QuoteThis is HUGE.http://news.xbox.com/2016/03/14/lett...ox-updates-gdc -------------------Cross-Network Play First, in addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well. This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks. Of course, it's up to game developers to support this feature, and Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players. We're thrilled to confirm that Psyonix's Rocket League will be one of the first games to take advantage of this new capability by enabling cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players, with an open invitation for other networks to participate as well. ------------------- Edit: obviously for this to work with PSN, Sony needs to allow the same from PSN versus other networks. Not only PCs. Edit 2: tweet from Ybarra: "On cross network play: gamers want more people to play with. We're enabling that and giving devs bigger MP pools."

Honestly, they are so fudgy moving away from Xbox as a console brand. They really don't have to give a dang anymore.

Let's see how many games adapt this though.

They've all but announced giving up on consoles. If you look at their gdc schedule it's all about windows.

Yeah, it's crazy. I really didn't expect them to throw the towel like this.

This is still good news though, hope Sony agrees to cross console multiplayer. Don't think it would hurt their console at this point.

I don't think they've ever been against it. Pretty sure it was MS who stopped it.
I'd be surprised if they don't allow it.

Well we'll see, I do hope they aren't against it, but maybe being the marketleader changed their opinion on the matter.

People are bringing up m&k vs Controller.  I wish that topic would die. I had zero problems playing pc guys with a pad.  keyboard users are easy to spot in game by their movements, because it isn't as smooth as a game pad.

Ludicrous Speed

At least everyone will be on broadband now. Last time I experienced cross platform play was Dreamcast with Quake 3 and pretty much every PC player had broadband so they had a very low ping AND the kb/mouse advantage and it was brutal.

I don't see this as any big deal unless it opens up to big third party games.

Do they seriously have nothing scheduled for Xbox?

Legend

Pretty huge news!

With XBO converting to PC it seems like a necessity. Hopefully this can get cross play between NX and PS4.
