Phil Spencer: It's okay if PC gamers don't buy an Xbox

QuoteHe continued: "I was actually asked by somebody, 'Did you do Forza 6: Apex as a way of teasing the PC gamers with how good Forza is so they'll go buy an Xbox One?' No. That's not the plan.

"So they might not [buy an Xbox One]," Spencer said. "And I want that to be OK."

He quickly added that, to him, there are still plenty of reasons PC gamers might want an Xbox One — namely, for the different gaming experience consoles provide.

"I think there's something very unique about playing console games on my television," he said, "10 feet away, with a controller in my hand, you and I sitting next to each other, either playing against each other or playing with each other — that is different from playing on my PC gaming rig sitting from 2 feet away playing with a keyboard and mouse or even a controller," he said.

"THAT MICROSOFT HAS A PRESENCE [ON PC AND CONSOLE] IS GONNA MAKE YOUR LIFE BETTER"

Spencer went on to say that "we're gonna make the absolute best TV gaming console experience we possibly can, and if you decide that you want a PC gaming rig and to have an Xbox One, the fact that Microsoft has a presence in both of those places is gonna make your life better."

Ok, I swear to god that I've seen Phil Spencer make comments just a few months ago, I think in relation to Halo 5, that people are moving away from couch multiplayer/co-op and are only online for that now. And here he's going on about sitting on a couch and playing together with someone, being a reason for buying the X1? Come on man, where's the consistency?

I'm not really seeing that as a contradiction personally.

Quote"I think the team made a trade-off based on what they see happening in the market today and what they wanted to do with their game," Spencer explained. "I love the nostalgia of the couch co-op of what Halo did in the past, but I also know in the realities of the day with people's busy lives, it's not as easy to get everybody in the same physical place. It's one of the advantages that Xbox Live obviously offers."

Both cases, he's saying that he loves co-op, but in the Halo case he is saying that he thinks that this is the reason why they did this.

"He thinks" makes it sound like he wasn't involved in this decision process. :P

But I just think it's weird for him to say that a reason for buying a console is couch multiplayer, when he before said that they specifically cut it out of their biggest franchise because people weren't playing it anymore. If you see couch co-op as a selling point for your console then don't cut it out of your own games, you know?

Though they including it in Gears 4, so apparently they are just flip flopping when it comes to their stance on couch multiplayer.

He might not have been involved in the process.
Can't really be sure to what extent his involvement is on every project.  It's not like Phil can be a part of everything.  Even something as big as split screen, it's possible that he wasn't involved with that.  Or even if he was involved with it, they might have argued against him.  "Hey Phil, we are really focusing on this.  We don't think split screen is really something to focus on.  We are making the game as big and whatever as we can."
