The problem with MS/Nintendo Consoles is they are just soo skippable.

think about it.

when i got a wii i was able to play gamecube games on wii.  and the wiiU can play wii games.  xbox 360 can play xbox (one) games and xbox one can play xbox 360 game.  microsoft and nintendo are just committed to always being the last generation of games to their next generation console,.. a commitment i fully expect to continue with the nintendo NX and xbox two.

but with sony if i want to play ps2 game i have to have a ps2.  if i want to play ps3 games i have to have a ps3.  so if i don't get a ps4 how will i ever play the games on a ps4?

with sony i'm compelled i to have to buy every console.  microsoft and nintendo consoles just feel like an every other generation thing now.  and that's their biggest problem,.. their consoles are just soo easy to skip.

Backwards compatibility is overrated. Why would I buy a brand new next gen console so I can play my old last gen games?

And people who go crazy when a console is announced backwards compatible are just making loud noises for no reason. Backwards compatibility is barely a selling point for the large majority of consumers. Most people just don't give a dang. When they buy a brand new console they want brand new experiences.

There's a reason the Xbox One didn't see a sales surge when they announced backwards compatibility (albeit limited).
Legend made me remove this. Everybody riot.

I'm actually hoping that the NX Console SKU is not backwards compatible.

Backwards compatibility, on paper, is nice. However, it's usually one of the last things console manufacturers think about because it's not cost effective. This is especially true if the architecture between adjacent consoles are vastly different. It takes a lot of time and thus, money, to develop a good emulation solution.

I do kinda disagree with the notion that BC is reason for the Wii U/XBO's "skippability" and rather that they're niche consoles. The Wii U has quite a good library of games, but that has not translated to a lot of sales suggesting that it's attractive to only the dedicated Nintendo fans. The XBO is also niche because XBO gamers are more interested in shooters and sports games more than anything else. It sounds counter-intuitive since shooters and sports aren't niche genres, but the limited scope makes the XBO niche, in my opinion. WRPGs have a much higher attachment rate on the PS4. Japanese games, especially, do poorly on the XBO which has led to many games skipping the console.

The problem with your argument is that games aren't frozen in time. They age, get patches, and online portions die.

Playing games at launch, near launch, a few years late, and a generation late are all completely different experiences with modern titles.

i honestly don't play many online games.  last gen the only titles i put a real amount of online play into was killzone 2 and uncharted 3.  so far this gen just rocket league.

i duuno, "skippablility" probably isn't a major market factor but i'll be honest,... it's a big reason i'm not buying a wiiU/3DS.   i want to play a handful of games:  pushmo, captain toad, DK tropical freeze, zelda a link between worlds, mario 3D world.

i mean, the shortness of the list is certainly part of it.  but knowing i'll be able to pick up these titles for the next hardware reduces any feeling of urgency that i'll ever need a wiiU/3DS.  i'll just save the several hundred dollars and pick them up for NX.

Historically though, Sony was good on BC, and Nintendo wasn't.

Sony - PS2 plays PS1, PS3 played PS2 and PS1 for a while, PS3 still plays PS1.

Nintendo never had any BC in their home consoles until the Wii.
MS, though, has spent quite a bit of time making their consoles BC through software.

Quite frankly I don't agree at all.  If anything I'd skip a Nintendo or MS console, because they just don't offer me as much.  The Wii U is really expensive, and realistically I'm likely to only play a couple games.  Not really worth it as is.
MS is in the same boat.

Sony has Horizon, Uncharted 4, Bloodborne and bunches of games.
