I got Horizons for my birthday and have been playing it.

First impressions are really positive, although doing planetary stuff doesn't earn significant money. Driving the buggy is really confusing and the control defaults are horrible, but with practice and customization it becomes pretty fun to drive. Base assaults are fun and for the first time I'm making enemies and shooting people.

Bases are guarded by turrets and flying drones. One type of drone is huge and called a goliath.

My first battle with one was crazy. In the middle of nowhere I was investigating a point of interest. Suddenly the goliath popped out of the sand and started shooting. I fought back and quickly depleted its shields, but my shots were only doing minor damage to its hull. Meanwhile its machine gun lasers were tearing me to shreds so I quickly started retreating. When I thought I was out of range, the goliath launched a barrage of missiles at me. These crashed down like mortar fire as I was racing back to my ship. My health was down to 8%. The goliath fired a second round, but luckily I found protection underneath my ship and boarded. Inside my massive transport ship I had plenty of shields but no weapons. So I started engines and flew towards the goliath while flying through a third batch of missiles. Headbutted that sucker with my 250 ton ship and got an insta kill with only minor damage to myself  ;D

Flying over planets feels great. Gravity is pulling the ship down and completely changes how things feel. Ships have huge thrusters on their rears and large ones on their underbellies, but the top, front, and sides only have pretty small thrusters. This means it's important to keep your ship right side up, otherwise your side/top thrusters are being used to counteract gravity.

They are usually not strong enough, and are blasted at 100% which quickly heats up your ship. Flying feels cool and is so much more developed than it is in space. Flying around a canyon is great.

Still a lot left for me to try out, those are just my early impressions.

2.1 has some elements of the character creator, at least NPCs for contracts.

Legend

The Thargoid barnacles have a strange icon on them, strongly resembling a nearby galaxy called the Large Magellanic Cloud.

In previous games, it was rumored that Thargoids came from the LMC.

In Elite Dangerous, a ship recently disappeared after testing new warp drive technology.

Put 2 and 2 together, and it looks like another galaxy is going to be added to Elite.

Awesome, I couldn't imagine playing with out a stick. I don't have an independent throttle tho. So that kind of sucks. So I use the key board for that.

That's the one I have. If your looking for something cheap to try. And it works perfectly.

I'll be waiting till I get PC VR. Having hands line up with in game hands will be sweet.

So sounds like you'll want something with a throttle.

Also I found this, I think I'll make one. It's cheap and it would easily fit in a closet when you're not using it.

That looks way too janky for my tastes.

Ideally the VR headset needs to subtract the motion of the chair. That way the chair only applies force to the body and not camera shake.

Also the rig should be set up on a centrifuge, so that force can be applied greater than 1G.

Well it's a homemade rig, an it's using a separate program to get the motion data from the game, if it had native support it would be much better.
