Steam Hardware Survey Says Only 34% Of Users Run Games At 1080p

So much for the #PCMASTERRACE

I always suspected the majority of PC gamers boasting about how they'll play GTA 5 at 4k was BS

Guess this kind of confirms it considering only 1/3 can manage 1080p.

Mmm_fish_tacos

The amount of people that can run 4k is pretty small.

I figured 1080 would be the standard. I guess not.

Interesting that 1080p hasn't become the standard yet. The plurality of PC gamers game on 1080p, but 34% isn't all that high either.

Xevross

That's weird, I always play in 1080p or higher and I'm on a laptop which isn't so powerful.

I'm really not too surprised. Only the most hardcore gamers will keep up with tech and update their rigs.

I went from NES to snes to 64 then Ps1 then Xbox then to PC before PS3 and finally ps4.

My rig was 1k before monitor and within a year it was obsolete and couldn't play games on high settings. By the time ps3 launched my rig was garbage. But i invested 1k in it. I was no way going to put another couple hundred to bring it up to ps3 standards only three years later. The PC master face always made me chuckle because I was apart of it and know first hand how much battleship that is unless you have a dang good amount of disposable income and nothing else to spend it on. Consoles are much better on the wallet and uniformity.

4k is .07% of steam users, and there are around 100 million steam users(rounding for easy math). That's 70k users rocking 4k. That's a huge number to spread out over online forums. People saying they are playing in 4k, are probably playing in 4k.

This is more or less the issue.  You always have to overkill a rig to play console games at 60fps and a higher resolution.  While higher resolution is way nicer, it also doesn't give you better graphic tech.  Arkham City on PC doesn't look better than Arkham City on ps3.  Graphic cycles are always dependant on consoles.

Plus if they're using 4k, they're likely going to be "hardcore" and generally more involved in things like forums and game news than the average user.

It's actually a little bit higher because there's a few % points that are playing at resolutions higher than 1080p and aren't counted in the 34%.

Usually, but resolution makes a pretty big difference to be honest.  Playing Skyrim, even at low settings 1080p was better than PS3 visuals.

Image quality is a weird one. With some games I feel it makes them look too clean.

How so?

Gets rid of the grittiness, and also exposes flaws with the graphics. Kinda like watching a blue ray release of a 1930's film.

Gotcha, yeah.

Visual stuff is complicated, so many factors that affect visuals in different ways.

Like 30fps being more cinematic  ;)

What Legend says :P.  Though I think we're starting to hit diminishing returns when it comes to resolution.  But who knows.
