I don't care about Japanese games in general.
How could you care about something without playing it?

By watching videos, reading impressions, hearing discussions, seeing screenshots, etc.

I care about Splatoon yet I've never played it.

But having played similar games gives you a better perspective of what the game is about.

Played games similar to Splatoon means that you've had more experience and have a better feel for what you'd like to see in a game.  Whereas a japanese game, you've got no experience with.  So even reading impressions, might give you an idea of the game, but it won't give you a feel for it.

Yes they give a better perspective, but I still feel I have a fine perspective without them. It's not like I've never played an rpg.

When it comes to Japanese games, a lot of them have acquired tastes. Some people don't like the anime artstyle. Some Japanese games have quite a bit of fanservice of which not everyone is a big fan. And there are those games that just plain weird.
