Shu Yoshida talks about other 1st Party Games on GameStop's Livestream

Yeah. Watching the interview. He said he's very excited for Bend's new game. They talked about The Last Guardian. It was a little tough for me to understand what he was trying to say but it sounded like Shuhei was saying that while some of the former members of Team Ico became independent there's plenty of the team still fully under Japan Studio. I got the impression that Ueda can still be relied on to help with future projects. The Last Guardian was switched to PS4 about 3 years ago because they had to make a choice between compromising on the original vision of the game to bring it to PS3 or making it the way they intended for PS4. They also didn't want to announce the game until they were confident that they could deliver on a release window and show actual gameplay.

They spoke about Horizon. The core team behind Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 wanted to work on something new but Guerrilla had hired new people who wanted to work on Killzone. So a compromise was made. The new guys and some of the old team worked on Shadow Fall while a core group from the old team worked on Horizon. Once Shadow Fall shipped the freed up manpower was then redirected to work on Horizon. He says that Guerrilla's engine for Horizon is basically its second generation engine and can handle many objects and large vistas. The game has been playable for over a year because the team working on it at first wanted to make sure from early on that they had solid gameplay. He stressed that even though the game looks great (in typical Guerrilla fashion) the team really did put an emphasis on gameplay.

Shuhei said that he feels it's important for a studio to eventually do something different because even though they may make several games for one franchise consecutively, for the developers it can start to feel like they've been working on the same game for 10 years. That becomes risky for the mentality of the studio even if it's a financially safe bet for a time. When asked about what the hell Dreams from Media Molecule is Shuhei says that it's a huge project and really a big creation platform. He admits that the game needs to be taken in over time to fully understand what it is. E3 was used as the opener for Dreams. To get people curious about it and show them some pretty images. At Paris Game Week they plan on showing a lot more about it. He sounds like he hopes that by that time people will understand the scope of the project. Says it's much more flexible than LittleBigPlanet.

When asked why the Morpheus presentation lasted only two minutes and twenty seconds instead of spending a lot of time talking about it, Shu responded, "Because if we spend longer than two minutes and twenty seconds talking about something that isn't a core game you'll hate it". He says that the best way to get people excited about Morpheus is to let them experience it and talk about it. Colin chimes in and says EVE Valkyrie blew him away and that he was someone who didn't believe that VR was going to be good until he experienced it himself.

He dodges a question about Santa Monica's internal development and transitions it to a passing mention of a project from Japan Studio he's really excited about. They ask him about Gravity Rush 2 since we haven't heard about it in a while and Sony recently said they're no longer working on big Vita titles. He first says he doesn't recall them actually calling it Gravity Rush 2. He takes a moment to think about his answer while they're talking and says it's another project that Sony is waiting for the right time to talk about. Though he says he has played it. He then mentions Sucker Punch's next title, being excited about it, and says he has played that, too. Pretty sure he said this to get a reaction from Greg.

He talks about events like PlayStation Experience and how Sony has learned a lot from how powerful community events can really be. He says that he's not sure they've officially announced their plans but he agrees that it has to happen. Then he gets asked about Quantic Dream's next game. He looks amused and almost as if he wants to tell them that of course he can't say if they'll be at Paris Games Week or not. Then he fires off with, "Well... I've played it..." with the obvious intention of really getting at Greg once again. He then talks about Gamescom and Paris Games Week. He confirms once again that Sony will be at Gamescom but their big conference will be done at PGW instead. He says Sony's next big event is Tokyo Game Show.
