Have the tides of the console wars turned for Nintendo?

The backlash to their E3 has just been insane. Every comment they make about it is just adding to the fire, and making it a bigger and bigger mess.

It's up to you whether this backlash is deserved or not, but it's happening regardless. Core fans are pissed. Metroid P FF is getting destroyed with thumbs down: link Even the digital event itself has an insane amount of hate for it. 9,000 thumbs down compared to just 7,000 thumbs up: link

To me this feels a lot like Microsoft in 2013. The hate train has left the station and it's not going to be easy to stop it. So do you think this anti Nintendo hate parade will stick around till at least the NX is revealed, or will it all blow over pretty soon?

DD_Bwest

it was bound to happen eventually,  its kinda like a sports team.   Things were getting worse and worse, and true fans will hold out for a long time until..  something breaks..   and they want a complete shuffle, New gm + coach + make some big moves.   its kinda hard for nintendo to do that as a response though, since they arent a sports team :P

i dont think this will just blow over, its been a long time in the making and nintendo needs to really step it up

Oh look. Another comment by Reggie having a very negative response.

Reggie Fils-Aime: Current state of VR isn't fun - NeoGAF

QuoteJust saw this article at Polygon:https://www.polygon.com/2015/6/18/88...of-vr-isnt-fun
QuoteEarlier this week, I had a chance to chat with Fils-Aime about his take on the industry, Nintendo and the state of things to come in gaming. In light of Microsoft's HoloLens, the Oculus Rift, the PlayStation's Project Morpheus, I wanted to know if Nintendo was reevaluating its take on virtual reality. Is there a Virtual Boy 2 in our future?
Probably not, at least not yet. Nintendo, it seems, remains pessimistic about the current state of the technology.
"We have knowledge of the technical space, and we've been experimenting with this for a long, long time," Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. "What we believe is that, in order for this technology to move forward, you need to make it fun and you need to make it social."I haven't walked the floor, so I can't say in terms of what's on the floor today, but at least based on what I've seen to date, it's not fun, and it's not social. It's just tech."

What do you think? Do you agree with Reggie here?

Yeah this isn't going to blow over for at least a few weeks.

And then.... They win 3 times in 6 years.

Nintendo went from having a terrific E3 from last year to arguably the worst E3 I've seen. Reactions were extremely negative and someone even began a petition to cancel Metroid Prime: Federation Force on Change.org (I don't approve of this, btw). I don't think this is going to blow over anytime soon.

DD_Bwest

something tells me his time is slowly drawing near..  lol that is so bad, "i havent tried any of it yet, but i can tell you its not fun"  *facepalm

I think this E3 probably killed any buzz splatoon and Wii U had. I think the speculation of NX being the next nintendo home console and will release next year and nintendo killing wii u support has done a lot of damage.... Probably to the point that the amount of positive PR they need to do would have to rival Sony's during ps4 announcement and launch just to negate the speculation. Probably to the point that giving into the speculation would be a viable option

If you were the big cheese at Nintendo, how would you handle this? What's your strategy going forward and launching a new system?

I would first and foremost shut up. Just hunker down and stay quit while most of the hate dissipates. Then as the holidays come up, resume regular operations.

In Feb., announce a special Nintendo Direct/Event that will be a full on press conference. Have it in Las Vegas or some other big American city. At the show, start off by apologizing for the Wii U's lack of software in the past year.

Then go on to announce the NX itself. It's called the Nintendo Core, a reference to their commitment to core gaming fans. The Core is a strong and powerful system. x86 based and about twice as good as PS4 across the board. 16GB GDDR5 RAM, 4 teraflop GPU, etc. It has a small and sleek form factor, making it similar in size to the PS4.

Then it's time to drop the bombs. The Nintendo Core is NOT the Wii U's replacement, but a new next gen console designed for its own unique market. Wii U is for casuals while Core is for dedicated gamers. As part of this, both systems share games. The Core is backwards compatible with the Wii U, and the Wii U is forwards compatible with the Core. Developers only need to build their games for Core and then Nintendo can recompile it for Wii U with lower graphic settings. (This feature will eventually be announced to work for smartphones and their next handheld as well, but that's not something to announce here)

Also Nintendo is serious about third party support. Platform game royalties have been dropped completely for the Core. Publishers only need to pay Nintendo the standard royalty for DLC and other supplementary content. This is huge because it makes 3rd party pubs prefer gamers buy their games on Core vs PS/XB/PC. Even if a Nintendo Core port sells half as good as the other versions, it makes the company almost as much money. Plus with Core being x86, ports are very easy compared to the past.

Zelda is announced as the big launch title. Additionally a big third party game has been bought as a timed exclusive. Mass Effect Andromeda would work. Other smaller titles also litter the release, and ports of big 3rd party games are all there (even if Nintendo has to pay for them).

At E3 the price is revealed: $399. System has paid multiplayer to make up for this red ocean price.

And thus Nintendo is saved!

You can only plug your ears and close your eyes for so long.  Hopefully this is the smack in the face they need.  But, knowing the 60 year olds running the company, it's not.

QuoteReggie just said this:
QuoteFrom a Nintendo perspective, we clearly have strength here in the Americas, we have strength in Europe and we have strength in Japan. That isn’t necessarily true of some of our more direct competitors. We’ve also said publicly that we are already hard at work on our next home console and that’s another element we’ll be talking about much later

More fuel to the NX is a console fire?

I like how one minute Nintendo isn't directly competing with anyone else and the next minute they are. Always one or the other depending on what sounds better at the time.

Is he fudgy delusional?  His "competitors" don't have strength in NA, Europe and Japan?  Sony's about to become the top selling hardware manufacturer in Japan.  Microsoft outsold the Wii U due to NA, let alone what Sony's been doing.  And Europe?  There's only one console manufacturer in Europe: Sony.

Cute Pikachu

I agree with Legend they need to go all out on NX in terms of power games and marketing have MK9 as a spring title the following year and have smash; pikmin 4; Galaxy Collection; 3rd parties; New HC IP; and maybe a Galaxy 3 all in that fiscal year. That should be strong enough for decent sales.
Then the next fiscal year have exclusive MH5; Mainline Pokemon; and Animal Crossing along with another Op and 3rd parties. After that go Splatoon and Prime 4 and a Hero of Time Collection with a 3rd party exclusive megaton and more 3rd parties.
