Apparently a lot of this is addressed in the book.

In the book it's more clear that they're building huge solar arrays in Africa to capture energy to charge the astrophage, to use it as an energy storage.

Yeah I read the book and that's where this is from.

They aren&#39;t using it in Africa for any reason beyond project hail mary. They pave over the sahara just to get enough astrophage for the ship. They talk about all the problems this has caused.<br><br>Vs instead just getting it from the &quot;source&quot; in space.<br>

It could be complicated.

Astrophage is living, reproducing and able to cross star systems. It would be hard to set up infrastructure to keep it manageable.

It's also shown to be somewhat hard to manage. Even the other top scientists are blown up trying to work with it.

Yeah still do project hail mary cause you wanna learn more of course. But you could do it as a trivial sideproject instead of the main show.<br><br>You just need to put a giant fishing net easentially in space.
