Quote from: nnodley on Oct 03, 2025, 05:33 PMI'm gonna be going to Epic Universe in about a month and I'm so worried Stardust will still be closed by then cause of the death and the family suing for a payday.

The death is tragic, but the man had a spinal injury and was in a wheelchair and assumed the risk of the ride. There shouldn't even be a case.
Oh that's the update?

Yeah that's tragic but really flips the tables. It has nothing to do with stardust racers. That just happened to be the ride he was on when tragedy struck.

yep as shaming as it is, someone with a spinal injury should never be riding a coaster.

Though they also claim other people are coming forward with head injuries or headaches after riding.   But i've seen those all were seemingly checked out by universal and were a cause of a pre-existing conditions.

nnodley

they want to keep the coaster closed until the lawsuit is done. Which could be months or years. It's a bit sad the family is using his death for a money grab.

kitler53

woah, hadn't heard of that.  the description of the incident sounded pretty gruesome but i watched a POV of the coaster and it looks like a really tame coaster.   this year i've been to six flag great america and cedar point and can think of at least 6 coasters that are clearly more intense that stardust racers.   if stardust is "unsafe" then all rollar coasters are "unsafe".

Yeah I've heard similar from other people. People say universals velocicoaster is more intense

Ohhhh yay! Stardust is back open!!!!!

Got my iPhone 17 Pro Max (Orange and 2 TB) and my Air Pods Pro 3 as well.

I bought a ESR Cyber Tough Case and ESR Screen protector

For some reason cant re-size images so I'll just post my images from ResetERA

I was teaching a class and I asked my students what the new iPhone was.  I honestly thought it was 14 cause I remember watching the presser for it with my students years ago (Where they showed off RE4).  To my surprise we're at 17 now O_O

Oh that's fun with your name on the airpods.

I'll look in to better image hosting here.

I'm impressed Apple hasn't switched to years yet. Sticking with 17 is kinda bold.

Aw gross, my dog brought in the tail of something. Maybe squirrel. But fur was darker.

read the story and thought of legend:
https://arstechnica.com/space/2025/10/something-from-space-may-have-just-struck-a-united-airlines-flight-over-utah/

QuoteThe National Transportation Safety Board confirmed Sunday that it is investigating an airliner that was struck by an object in its windscreen, mid-flight, over Utah.

The strike occurred Thursday, during a United Airlines flight from Denver to Los Angeles. Images shared on social media showed that one of the two large windows at the front of a 737 MAX aircraft was significantly cracked. Related images also reveal a pilot's arm that has been cut multiple times by what appear to be small shards of glass.

QuoteThe captain of the flight reportedly described the object that hit the plane as "space debris." This has not been confirmed, however.

Yeah it'll be interesting if that ends up being true.

Probably not, impacts against houses are super super super rare and there are far more houses than planes, but still possible.

okay, just rambling a bit here...

obviously space stuff hits earth from time to time.  meteors are a thing.

from my understanding most space things burn up in the atmosphere before making it all the way to earth.   not sure a plane is flying high enough to make a substantial difference in the relative density of objects that pass though an airplanes cruising altitude vs the ground but there must be some non-zero difference.

the impact of space debris with earth can leave some massive craters vs the size of the object that hits.   to have only enough energy to crack a windshield is either highly improbable or incredibly lucky.

if not space debris then what else could it be?!?

A ton of space stuff hits Earth every single day. It's just that the vast majority of that gets burnt up in the atmosphere. And then the vast majority that reaches the surface just hits the ocean or a field.

Whatever the plane hit would have been falling at near terminal velocity, not the massive velocities that act like a bomb on the ground.

This guy in 2024 had a piece of a battery from the ISS hit is house. Super one in a billion odds so it was a big story in space circles. You can see it had plenty of force to rip through multiple floors but nothing crazy like a big meteor impact.

So I think the energy checks out for cracking a windshield. My disbelief is exclusively because it's just so unlikely that a plane and space debris were at the same place at the same time.

IDK what it was. This pilot is doubtful as well.
