Probably just a scientist not wanting people to know what he was up to. Although I do love the theories that it's from aliens and contains ultimate truths about the universe.

On a similar note, there was writing on an ancient rock that no one could decipher.

Ended up just being cracks lol.

Nah the rock was a pretty big thing that for hundreds of years was one of the top projects for linguists to figure out. At least that's how I'm remembering it.
