I get that download problem too, speed sometime randomly drop to being very slow which, then it goes back to normal. Very annoying.

It's because it's better for advertising. Higher number =better.

Calculating in bits is more or less legacy. Gotta remember, the fastest modem you could buy at the time was 4kb/s(kilobytes) . Same reason why we count in kilobytes before we switched to megabytes, and then to gigabytes.

I've decided I'm going to try to learn Japanese.  Got some books to help with the writing part.  We'll see how it goes.
