dont you have a volt meter?  Lol
I do not have a volt meter as I'm not an electrician or normally need one...

Or a lightbulb and some spare wires?
I could have done trial and error to test which breaker it was on, but it was just quicker to turn off the main to the house instead

ah okay, i have a couple left over from my apprenticeship lol they are good to have as you never know when they might come in handy.  or as Legend mentioned you can just wire in a light to test it, or a plug and use a lamp lol you can also just short it out and see which breaker trips  :P

but i guess turning it all off isnt to bad if you have enough natural light

edit:  this makes me think of a good question,  how many people here have been electricuted?    ive felt 240 a couple times, and 120a whole bunch lol

yeah it seemed like the quickest option lol... one day probably would be a good idea to test which breaker is what to label it though

yea thats probably a good idea lol makes life easier for any emergency fixes. i hate having a breaker box that isnt labelled, both on the door, and under the cover plate lol

if its electric baseboard heating, chances are they are any 20-25A breakers(i have seen 15A breakers for some heaters, but they gotta be rather small).    range and dryer are generally 40 and 30,  and standard lighting and sockets are mostly 15A.plus if they are 240v heaters instead of 120 thats even easier.   atleast in canada anyways. lol    electric furnace would definitely not be one of the 15A's lol

but i dont know how much your guys code differs from ours

no baseboard heating, I have heat pump (electric)
I did the compatibility checker on nest.com before installing the new thermostat

ah okay.  well that shouldnt be to hard to figure out if you ever get around to labelling it,  and its better than have 4-5 different heating circuits lol

have you done much electrical before?  some people get intimidated and confused, but its rather easy if you understand it.

just simple things like changing outlets and fixtures, nothing requiring me to run new lines or change around circuits.
